In Cannes, APSA and founding partner FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) announced Iranian producer Manoochehr Mohammadi as winner of the 10th FIAPF Award for Outstanding Achievement in Film in the Asia Pacific Region, to be awarded at the APSA ceremony on 24 November in Brisbane, Australia.

This will be the second Asia Pacific Screen Award for APSA Academy member Mohammadi, whose 2013 film THE PAINTING POOL (Hoze Naghashi), starring APSA Academy Member and 2015 APSA International Jury member Negar Javaherian, won the prestigious 2014 UNESCO Award.

APSA renewed its partnership with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) Asia Pacific at the 6th Beijing International Film Festival in April.

Together we launched the seventh round of the MPA APSA Academy Film Fund, a scheme which awards four $US25,000 script development grants to APSA Academy members and their feature film projects.

At Beijing, we also announced the Film Fund judges. Returning Chair Andrew Pike (Australia) will be joined by André Morgan (USA/China), the Oscar-winning founder of production company Ruddy Morgan Organisation, and Fujioka Asako (Japan), former director of the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival and longstanding selection committee member for the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Network of Documentary Fund.

The MPA Film Fund has a notable record of identifying quality scripts which then go on to be produced, distributed and win recognition at festivals. MPA Film Fund recipients include:

  • Asghar Farhadi’s A SEPARATION which went on to win over 100 awards internationally including an Oscar, Golden Globe, Golden Bear and APSA for Best Film.
  • Maryam Ebrahimi’s NO BURQAS BEHIND BARS which swept major festivals around the globe, including an International Emmy and the biggest TV award in Europe - the Prix Europa Award for Best TV Documentary.
  • Shawkat Amin Korki’s MEMORIES ON STONE which won more than a dozen international awards including the 2014 APSA UNESCO Award and was Iraq’s official submission for the 88th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

The recipients of the grants will be announced during the 10th Asia Pacific Screen Awards Ceremony on 24 November in Brisbane, Australia.

The 29th Connecticut LGBT Film Festival’s Winning Films

The 29th Connecticut LGBT Film Festival concluded June 11 with dual screenings in downtown Hartford at Spotlight Cinemas and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. During the Festival’s nine-day run, audiences enjoyed more than 50 films from 17 countries and had the opportunity to interact with actors, directors, screenwriters and producers.

“Like all Americans, the committee of the Connecticut LGBT Film Festival woke on June 12 to the shocking news that 49 of our LGBT brothers and sisters had been murdered in Orlando,” said Festival Co-Directors Shane Engstrom and Laura Williams. “We are profoundly saddened that such a terrible tragedy occurred just hours after our closing night celebration ended. Horrible events like this underscore the need for and importance of LGBT festivals of all kinds. Yes, we continue to grieve. But we must seize every opportunity to come together to embrace and celebrate the diversity and beauty of our community, to educate people outside our community about who we are, and to affirm our dignity and worth as citizens with full rights to life and liberty. That will continue to be our mission.

“With heavy hearts at this terrible moment in our history, but also with deep gratitude for all of the film makers who contributed their work and their art to the 29th Connecticut LGBT Film Festival, we announce the following Audience and Jury Award winners.”

12th IFF Kino Otok - Isola Cinema is concluded

Kino Otok – Isola Cinema has created a true festival community in just five days and for the twelfth time

The 12th international film festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema concluded on Sunday with the screening of the film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors at the Manzioli open-air cinema. A selection of films has moved with the programme Otok to Ljubljana to Kinodvor and Slovenska kinoteka.

Director of the festival Tanja Hladnik and film programme selector Varja Močnik accompanied the epic film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors to the screen; the public got a chance to see the film through a 35-mm projector. Besides finishing the 12th international film festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema, we also commemorated the 20th anniversary of Kinoteka’s activity. Its first director and one of the first island’s godfathers Silvan Furlan has a section dedicated to him, Silvan’s bay.

Since the grand opening on Wednesday, the 1st of June, screenings from different places and times, different contents, genres, sings and forms, took place at the festival programme. One of the films that impressed the most at this year’s island’s edition are without a doubt For One More Hour with You from the Italian master documentary maker Alina Marazzi and films Fish Tail and What now? Remind me from the Portuguese director Joaquim Pinto.

We hosted directors and other makers of feature films or short films from the programme and many authors of short films from the section Video on the beach at the 12th edition of the international film festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema. Alongside Pinto and Marazzi we also hosted the Italian director Guiseppe Gaudino, the first Ethiopian director to be presented in Cannes Yared Zeleke, Austrian master of black-and-white glimmering look Peter Schreiner, legendary Serbian “črnovalovec” Želimir Žilnik, Serbian producer Sarita Matijević, producer of Alina Marazzi’s films Gianfilippo Pedote, Latvian master of the seventh art Laila Pakalnina, Spanish documentary maker EloyDomínguez Serén, Slovenian experimental film maker Davorin Marc, Italian director Luca Chinaglia, Latvian director RaitisĀbele and godfathers of films Mate Dolenc (godfather of Fish Tail), Breda Pečan (godmother of Lamb), Nataša Tič Ralijan (godmother of Mountain) and Metod Pevec (Godfather of Anna). Alongside films we also hosted creators from other film festivals, Admir Ćulumarević, manager of the leading festival of musical documentary film in southeast Europe – Solo Positivo from Opatija, and Paola Bristot, programme manager of the Piccolo festival dell’animazione festival of animated film in Trieste.

Young film enthusiasts were impressed at the Submarine by Saturday’s and Sunday’s Fresh Film Catch where students from primary and high school featured their work. The auditorium was fully packed at the screening of the Ethiopian film Lamb, which was presented in the Manzioli open-air cinema by the festival guest Yared Zeleke – young viewers awarded him with a loud applause at the end of the film.

Great energy united festival guests, visitors and the team in a unique space of meetings; film creators – attendants of TorinoFilmLab and Re-Act workshops joined them at Manzioli palace and in Isola’s galleries. When the night fell, Lighthouse connected all of them into a festival community with a musical programme.

Unstable weather did not infringe the execution of the programme nor had a major effect on the visit, because the island’s team is ready for grey sky every year. Film events were moved to substitute locations: from Manzioli square to Isola’s House of Culture, Manzioli palace offered shelter to short meterage section Video on the beach, and a tent was set up for nights on the Lighthouse which was willing to accept all those visitors wishing for a good music. The Thursday’s night of the second section of Video on the beach kept the audience of a fully packed room on their seats for three hours, despite the move to the dry Manzioli palace.

Films from the festival programme in Ljubljana until Tuesday

Sunday’s conclusion represented the last act of Isola’s part of the festival, but the opportunities for viewing of certain films continue. Under the section of the programme called Otok in Ljubljana, Ljubljana’s Kinodvor screened a sweetheart of Island’s audience Fish Tail from Joaquim Pinto and Nuno Leonel, and in Slovenska kinoteka İlker Savaşkurt’s film Balad of exiles: Yilmaz Güney was screened yesterday alongside Pinto’s debut film from 1987 Tall stories. Coming up are Argentinian documentary essay Toponymy by Jonathan Perel (9th of June at 19.00) and Alina Marazzi’s For One More Hour with You (14th of June at 18.30) which is well known to Isola’s public.

Jean Reno

French actor Jean Reno will be a guest at this year’s 51st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where he will receive the Festival President’s Award. He will receive the award on July, 4 at 10:30pm in the Grand Hall at the Hotel Thermal, where Luc Besson’s film Léonwill be screened to his honor.

This distinctive actor achieved international popularity thanks to his collaboration with director Luc Besson. Reno was nominated for a César Award for his performance in The Big Blue (Le Grand bleu, 1988), he appeared in La Femme Nikita (1990), and he received a second César nomination for Léon: The Professional(Léon, 1994). Based on this success, he soon appeared in Hollywood blockbusters such as Mission: Impossible(1996), Ronin (1998), Godzilla (1998), and The Da Vinci Code (2006).

Jean Reno has successfully alternated tough-guy roles in action films – two parts of the crime series The Crimson Rivers (Les Rivières pourpres, 2000, 2004),Empire of the Wolves (L’Empire des loups, 2005), andThe Sweeney: Paris (Antigang, 2015) – with comic roles, in particular in the film series The Visitors (Les Visiteurs). In fact, Reno’s third César nomination was for the role of Godefroy, a medieval knight who accidentally lands in the present day. Jean Reno is also a recipient of the European Film Academy Achievement in World Cinema Award.

Another fest win for Argyris Papadimitropolis’s SUNTAN

Argyris Papadimitropolis’s SUNTAN today received the Best International Feature Film Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.  The film also scooped the UPS Cinephile Award, given by the Youth Jury at the Brussels Film Festival, rounding out a successful week for the Greek production.

Papadimitropoulos’s third feature, SUNTAN stars Makis Papadimitriou as Kostis, the new doctor of Antiparos, a tiny Greek holiday island. He finds it hard to connect with anyone until he meets Anna, a young, beautiful traveller with whom Kostis’s unlikely flirtation becomes infatuation and ultimately, his obsession.

The Edinburgh jury described SUNTAN as “a compelling and unflinching portrait of one man’s journey from infatuation to desperation, marked out by a truly great performance from its lead actor.”

Alongside Papadimitriou is Elli Tringou as Anna. The supporting cast members include Dimi Hart, Hara Kotsali, Marcus Collen and Dutch actress and model Milou van Groessen.   Papadimitropolis’s previous credits include the 2011 Rotterdam opener Wasted Youth and the 2008 Greek box office hit Bank Bang.

Commenting on the Edinburgh award, Papadimitropolis says:  “Back in the late ‘90s I was a student in the UK. All the films that were awarded in the Edinburgh Film Festival were part of the conversation among us. We would go and watch everything with an Edinburgh laurel on the poster. Little did I know that 15 years later I would be so honoured as to be the recipient of such an Award.  I can’t wait to print new posters. Thank you to the lovely people of the Festival and the amazing Jury, I could not be happier for this award.”

Producer Phaedra Vokali of Marni Films adds: "What an amazing honour and joy to be part of the great company of films awarded in the Edinburgh Film Festival. Suntan is a rare breed of a film, made by a restless, hyper-talented director who was bold enough to trust me, and I could not be happier that the first movie I have produced has been recognized by such a prestigious institution. Thank you Edinburgh!"

SUNTAN received its World Premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival.  Visit Films are handling worldwide sales excluding Greece and Cyprus.

Jan Harlan is the Guest of Honour of Grossmann 2016

We are very happy to announce that producer Jan Harlan, long-time collaborator of Stanley Kubrick, is this year's guest of honour and receiver of the Lifetime Achievement award at Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival, taking place from the 12th to the 16th of July in Ljutomer, Slovenia.

Lasting for 30 years, Harlan's collaboration with Kubrick started with a project about Napoleon that would never be realized. It continued with A Clockwork Orange, where Harlan was an assistant producer, and lasted until Kubrick’s last film Eyes Wide Shut. It was Jan Harlan who suggested the use of Also Sprach Zarathustra on the soundtrack of 2001: A Space Odyssey and later became a literal keeper of the flame, overseeing with unflagging energy the huge archives and extraordinary exhibitions curated and created around the world today from Kubrick’s singular film opus. A brilliant lecturer in film schools around the globe, he not only communicates a priceless enthusiasm for this subject, but displays a questioning curiosity for new and young cineastes wherever he is invited.

He also made a moving documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures, which will be shown as a part of the retrospective of our guest of honour’s films. A worthy representative of an extraordinary family of film-making talents, we welcome him with great delight to the family of Grossmann in 2016. It is an honour and a pleasure for us to honour him as few personalities shine so brightly in the darks of the cinema today.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is pleased to reveal the nominees for 55th annual Rose d’Or Awards which honour the best in international radio, television and online entertainment.

The winners of the biggest and most influential entertainment awards event will be decided at a ceremony in Berlin on 13 September.

Over 400 programmes from more than 130 broadcasters and production companies in 33 different countries were submitted for this year’s Rose d’Or awards. Programme makers are competing to take home a coveted Rose d’Or Award in 11 categories. There are six categories for television and online video – Reality & Factual Entertainment, Game Show, Comedy, Sitcom, Entertainment and, new for 2016, Drama Series. Five Radio awards will be given for best Comedy, Talk Show, Music Show, Event of the Year and, also new for 2016, Audio Stories.

“The response from across the entertainment world has been incredible,” said EBU Head of Television and Rose d’Or organiser Jeroen Depraetere. “With such high levels of creativity on show this year our juries have had a tough job selecting the nominees competing to win a Rose d’Or trophy in Berlin. The EBU is proud that once again the Rose d’Or Awards can provide a platform for the world’s best entertainment programme makers.”

Three finalists have been selected for each of the categories, with the exception of the ‘Event of Year’ radio category where the jury only selected one nominee.

For the first time in 2016, the shortlisted nominees will present their programmes to their peers ahead of the Rose d’Or Award ceremony and have a say in who takes home the coveted trophies at the Rose D’Or Award ceremony itself at Axica in Berlin on Tuesday 13 September.

New York Asian Film Festival 2016  has record anniversary year

Kankuro Kudo's anarchic Japanese comedy Too Young to Die! is the Audience Award Winner of the 15th New York Asian Film Festival, announced the festival's executive director Samuel Jamier today. The event came to a close on Saturday night after screening 51 films over 18 days at the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the SVA Theatre in Manhattan.

Too Young to Die!, which had its North American premiere at the festival, stars Ryunosuke Kamiki as a student sent to Buddhist hell after his whole class dies in a freak bus accident. There, he makes a pact with guitar-shredding demon Killer K, played by Tomoya Nagase, to be reincarnated and reunite with his high school crush. International sale of the film is handled by Toho Co Ltd.

Second- and third-placed in the audience vote were two South Korean thrillers, Woo Min-ho's Inside Men and Lee Il-hyeong's A Violent Prosecutor. Both films were major box office hits in South Korea. Lee Byung-hun, the star of Inside Men, attended the festival to receive one of three Star Asia Awards. Both films are productions of South Korea's Showbox Corporation, which also handles international sales.

Two Southeast Asian films came fourth and fifth in the audience vote: Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit's offbeat romantic comedy Heart Attack from Thailand, and Mario Cornejo's surfing relationship drama Apocalypse Child from the Philippines. Another film from the Philippines, Erik Matti's thriller Honor Thy Father, was placed eighth in the audience vote.

The NYAFF 2016 Box office grew 20%, setting a new record for the festival. Attendance was particularly strong for films from China, the Philippines and Japan.
