The 2014 Silk Screen Film Festival, held April 25th- May 4th, featured 25 full length films from all over Asia and the Middle East, as well as two shorts. The festival shares Asian culture with Pittsburgh each year with its diverse line-up which included strong Indian presence, Japanese samurai epics, enlightening documentaries, and the horror thrillers South Korea has become known for. Also represented were Taiwan, the Philippines, Iran, Sri Lanka, China, and a host of other nations. There were 47 showings at 4 locations across the city. Once again viewers had a chance to vote on their favorites through the RAGS Foundation People's Choice Award. All films (except opening, closing, and shorts) were eligible to win the award. ![]()
Silk Screen is proud to announce the winner of the RAGS Foundation People's Choice Award for the 2014 Film Festival: JADOO (UK/India) Director: Amit Gupta Cast: Tom Mison, Amara Karan, Harish Patel, Paul Bazley, Ray Panthaki, Kulvinder Ghir, and featuring Madhur Jaffrey Shalini, (Amara Karan) a successful lawyer living in London, has just accepted her boyfriend's (Tom Mison, of TV's Sleepy Hollow) proposal. While her fiancé is excited about meeting his future father-in-law, Shalini worries about something else. She's uncertain if her father is ready to accept this cross-cultural relationship. However, the larger, looming issue is the long-standing rivalry between her father and uncle. Shalini cannot be sure if her fiancé is ready to accept her family, either. The feud between her father and uncle started more than 20 years ago. The two brothers had a fierce dispute over an heirloom family cookbook. Following an extremely heated exchange, they have not spoken since. Their solution has been to stoke the rivalry over the decades by establishing competing curry houses across the street in Leicester's little India. Shalini travels home from London to inform her family about the wedding. Her biggest wish is to reunite her father and uncle and persuade them to cater together at her wedding. Like an entrée course needs an appetizer, the two brothers can't cook the perfect wedding banquet without each other. Persuading her father and uncle seems impossible. But the competition of an upcoming culinary contest is irresistible to the feuding siblings- and provides Shalini the perfect opportunity to mend fences.
