Serena, directed by Eric Lamhene from Luxembourg is the winner of the Best Picture of the sixth edition of the Malta Short Film Festival. The award ceremony was held at the Radisson Blu Resort in St Julians Malta under the auspices of Dr Owen Bonnici, Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government. Present for the event was also Film Commissioner Engelbert Grech and TVM chairman Dr Tonio Portughese.
Federico Tocchella’s film ‘Isaac’ won the Foreign Jury Award and Best Script and two Maltese directors James Moffett and Matt Stroud won the Local Director and Animation categories respectively.
The Malta Film Foundation, producers of the festival received over 1700 films from 50 countries. Joyce Grech, Executive Producer stated that “This year showed that the festival has a worldwide appeal and that it is growing from strength to strength parallel with the country’s film industry.”
The Malta Short Film Festival spans over 10 weeks with films shown and discussed on television and also streamed on the internet. It is an essential platform for filmmakers and a film literacy experience for television viewers. Audiences are estimated at 35,000 weekly.
