Neo Pangea wins Innovation Award at SXSW!
The virtual reality-inspired Breakthrough experience brings the 2016 SXSW Interactive Innovation Awards “Responsive Design” trophy to Neo-Pangea.
In a sea of brilliant minds converging to share ideas and sizzle in the Texas heat, Neo-Pangea’s Breakthrough online experience won the “Responsive Design” award in the international 2016 SXSW Interactive |
Awarded for excellent digital design and creating the best-integrated interaction in terms of content, aesthetics, and functionality, Neo-Pangea’s project for National Geographic Channel faced stiff competition from four other finalists. Among other projects also vying for the award was a dress that alters itself based on a viewer’s gaze and a charismatic droid from a little movie you may have heard about, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. |
The day before the awards ceremony, our enthusiastic team of sartorially resplendent Neo-Pangea Ambassadors introduced the project to the throngs of curious attendees at the inaugural SXSW Finalist Showcase. Even among 64 other top-quality finalist projects from all over the world, Breakthrough and Neo-Pangea proved to be irresistible to thousands of attendees who explored the showcase floor. The star of the booth was the buttery-smooth Breakthrough experience, but fresh gonfalons, straw hats, and swanky sashes never hurt when one it trying to make an impression. |
During the unrestrained revelry that followed our momentous victory, we met and made merry with all sorts of interesting people throughout Austin (some of whom brought their own security details) until the wee hours of the morning. Our entire team is ecstatic and humbled by this honor, and we can’t wait to do it all again next year! |

Igor Kovalyov wins the Grand Prix shorts in the category narrative with Before Love.

Vail Film Festival Announces Rising Star Tribute, Opening & Closing Films, and Friday Night Concert Lineup
Vail Film Festival organizers are pleased to announce the 2016 Rising Star Award, the Opening and Closing Night Films, and the Friday Night Concert Lineup, for the 13th annual Festival, taking place April 7-10, 2016 in one of the United States’ premier resort destinations, Vail, Colorado.
The Vail Film Festival is proud to honor Madison Davenport, one of Hollywood's leading young stars, with the 2016 Rising Star Award. Madison Davenport is already an industry veteran, having built an impressive resume since the age of 7. This past holiday season Madison was seen in the Universal comedy “Sisters” opposite Tina Fey and Amy Phoehler. Also in 2015, she had the lead role opposite Taryn Manning (“Orange Is the New Black”) in the indie feature “A Light Beneath Their Feet,” directed by Valerie Weiss. Davenport recently started production on the third season of Robert Rodriguez's cult classic “From Dusk Til Dawn: The Series.” Madison's credits also include her strong supporting role of ‘Na’el’ in Darren Aronofsky’s Biblical epic “Noah,” where she shared the screen with Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson and Anthony Hopkins, playing the love interest of Logan Lerman’s character. On the small screen, Madison is most known for her role on the hit Showtime series “Shameless” in which she delivered a memorable performance for two seasons portraying the fan favorite character of ‘Ethel.’ The Rising Star Award will be presented to Madison Davenport at the Festival Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 9th. Past Vail Film Festival Rising Star honorees include Jesse Eisenberg, Olivia Wilde, Krysten Ritter and Sophia Bush.
The 2016 Vail Film Festival will open with the Colorado Premiere of “Morris from America,” starring Craig Robinson, winner of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize. The film follows the adventures of a 13-year-old American boy who moves to Germany. Vail Film Festival alum Valerie Weiss’ new film, “A Light Beneath Their Feet,” will screen as the Closing Night Film. The film stars Taryn Manning (“Orange is the New Black") and VFF 2016 Rising Star honoree, Madison Davenport. The coming-of-age dramedy follows a high school senior (Davenport) who must choose between escaping to the college of her dreams or staying close to home to take care of her bipolar mother (Manning).
Some of the 2016 Vail Film Festival highlight films include the World Premiere of “Year By the Sea,” adapted from the novel of the same name written by Joan Anderson; the World Premiere of “Cut to the Chase,” by writer/director Blayne Weaver, starring Weaver and Lance Henriksen; the World Premiere of “Finding Her,” starring Johnny Whitworth, Maurice McRae and Jeremy Holm; and the World Premieres of the documentary films “Shelter in the City” by director Terrence Donnellan, and “Riot” by director Kevin McLaughlin.
Beyond the film screenings and nightly parties, the Festival is proud to present the annual Friday Night Concert, presented by L.A.’s renowned Hotel Café. The concert will take place on Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m. at Shakedown Bar in Vail Village. Tickets are free for pass holders and $15 at the door. The concert will feature acclaimed musicians Butterfly Boucher, Erin McCarley, Katie Herzig, K.S. Rhoads, and the band The Kin.
“Music and film go hand in hand, and we’re thrilled to once again showcase amazing musicians at our annual Friday Night Concert, one of the festival’s most popular events,” said festival Co-Director Scott Cross.

HKIFF40 honors filmmakers with awards of five competition sections
At Awards Gala at The Metroplex, the 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) revealed the winning films for five award categories, namely the Young Cinema Competition, the Documentary Competition, the Short Film Competition, the FIPRESCI Prize and the SIGNIS Award, in recognition of filmmakers’ outstanding achievement in the industry. The evening was also enhanced by the Asian Premiere of Crosscurrent (2016) with director YANG Chao’s attendance and meeting with the audience. Each competition was judged by an independent jury, consisting of renowned industry figures such as Sylvia CHANG - renowned director and actress, Denis CÔTÉ– film director and actor, Stephen TEO – acclaimed film scholar, LAM Kam-po – local film critic and YANG Li-Chou - Taiwan documentary director. (see Appendix for complete list of jurors). The Young Cinema Competition pays tribute to the future of the industry and aims to discover and honor budding filmmakers who push the envelope with their unique and innovative works. Eight films from a range of countries including China, Austria, Ghana/USA, Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia, Germany/Poland and Thailand competed for awards. The coveted Firebird Award was given to Life After Life (2016), directed by ZHANG Hanyi. Händl KlLAUS’s Tomcat (2016) won the Jury Prize this year. Many filmmakers embrace the documentary genre to address a variety of social issues. The Documentary Competition pays tribute to documentarians who inspire audiences with their insights. The Firebird Award went to Behemoth (2015), directed by ZHAO Liang. The Jury Prize was awarded to Vitaly MANSKY’s Under The Sun (2015). The Short Film Competition is a valuable platform for local and international filmmakers. The Festival selected 20 entries this year, among which Leonor TELES’s Batrachian’s Ballad (2016) won the Firebird Award. Pimpaka TOWIRA’s Prelude to the General (2016) received the Jury Prize. FIPRESCI is an association of the national organisations of professional film critics and film journalists from around the world. The FIPRESCI Prize recognises enterprising filmmaking and promotes young talent in Asian cinema. The award this year went to Pimpaka TOWIRA’s feature film The Island Funeral (2015). Established in 2004 and co-organised by the HKIFF and SIGNIS Hong Kong, the SIGNIS Award salutes films that fully express social and humanitarian concerns, as well as spiritual and artistic values. Martin ZANDVLIET’s Land Of Mine (2015) won the SIGNIS Award and Cesc GAY’s TRUMAN (2015) received the Commendation. The award ceremony was followed by the premiere at The Metroplex of Crosscurrent in the presence of director YANG Chao. The film was selected to compete for the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival and Mark Ping-Bin LEE won the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution (Cinematography) award. After his Cannes-awarded feature Passages in 2004director YANG Chao returns with Crosscurrent, about barge captain and failed poet GAO Chun (QIN Hao), who transports illegal cargo up the Yangtze River but encounters hardened prostitute AN Lu (XIN Zhilei) at each port. As the boat moves closer to the river’s source, AN Lu’s life unfolds in reverse, eventually bringing GAO Chun face-to-face with the pivotal moment that would chart the course of her life. Shot expertly by Mark Ping-Bin LEE, this earthbound magical-realist drama explores man’s eternal quest for the unknown and unknowable. “This film is a love poem for the most important river in China. There is a big classical tradition of Chinese poetry from the Tang Dynasty through the other dynasties to the present day that adopted various approaches to describe the Yangtze River. I am trying to extend the poem by means of cinematography,” said director YANG Chao. |
