DONALD CRIED by Kris Avedisian wins the Cinelab Award at the Festival del film Locarno on Festival Scope. The award, offered by Cinelab Romania, has been given by the audience of the first Festival del film Locarno online event in partnership with Festival Scope.

The initiative between Festival del film Locarno and Festival Scope has presented a selection of 9 films from the Concorso Cineasti del presente section. Each film screened following its premiere at the Festival until August 21, with a limit of 400 tickets per film, made available worldwide and for free.

As a result of the viewers’ votes, DONALD CRIED has become the winner of the first Cinelab Award, exclusively given for the Festival del film Locarno on Festival Scope. It provides technical services for the value of 22,000€ and it’s offered by Cinelab Romania.

DONALD CRIED world premiered at SXSW earlier this year and had its International premiere in Locarno. It is the follow-up to Kris Avedisian’s multi-awarded short of the same name. Starring the director himself, Jesse Wakeman, Kyle Espeleta and Louisa Krause, the film was produced by Electric Chinoland.

Kris Avedisian’s indie comedy was the first film to premiere online on the event, among a line-up featuring AKHDAR YABES (Withered Green) by Mohammed Hammad, GORGE CŒUR VENTRE by Maud Alpi, IL NIDO by Klaudia Reynicke, L’INDOMPTÉE by Caroline Deruas, MAÑANA A ESTA HORA by Lina Rodríguez, PESCATORI DI CORPI by Michele Pennetta, VIEJO CALAVERA by Kiro Russo and EL FUTURO PERFECTO by Nele Wohlatz (Best First Feature Award at the Festival del film Locarno).

With the aim of expanding the festival experience beyond the traditional cinemas, Festival Scope (www.festivalscope.com) is the online platform that brings exclusive events to film lovers worldwide. It partners with the most prestigious film festivals (like Venice, Rotterdam, New Directors/New Films, Cannes’ La Semaine de la Critique…) to present to the audience hand-picked selections of films. Created in 2010, its sister platform Festival Scope Pro is the go-to service for the industry exclusively reserved for film professionals.

Toni Erdmann has been voted best film by the members of the International Federation of Film Critics, FIPRESCI. The vote for the FIPRESCI Gran Prix 2016 saw the participation of 475 critics from all over the world, who made their choice from among the films released after 1st July 2015. Toni Erdmann outstripped the other finalists, Paterson, by Jim Jarmusch and Anomalisa, by Duke Johnson and Charlie Kaufman.

Maren Ade (Karlsruhe, Germany, 1976) is the first female director to carry off the award since its creation in 1999; former winners include reputed  filmmakers Pedro Almodóvar, Michael Haneke, Cristian Mungiu, Aki Kaurismäki, Paul Thomas Anderson, Jean-Luc Godard, Richard Linklater and George Miller, among others.

Ade is a director, screenwriter and producer. Her debut film, Der Wald vor lauter Bäumen (The Forest for the Trees), won the Special Jury Prize in the World Cinema section at Sundance 2005. In 2009 she presented at the Berlinale Alle anderen (Everyone Else). Toni Erdmann, her third feature as a director, premiered at the Cannes Festival, where it also won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 69th edition. As announced last Friday, the film, also a candidate for the European Parliament’s LUX Prize 2016, will participate in the Pearls section at the San Sebastian Festival. The Match Factory is responsible for its international distribution and Golem will distribute the film in Spain.

Maren Ade says: “I feel extremely honored to be chosen by the people who have seen the most films over the year. And thank you so much for giving Toni Erdmann such a great start in Cannes“.

Maren Ade will receive the FIPRESCI Gran Prix at the Festival opening gala on Friday, September 16th at the Kursaal Auditorium.

25th Annual Competition Awards $38,500 in Tuition & Film Grants

Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: KODK) announced the winners of its 25th annual KODAK Student Scholarship Program, Wednesday, Aug. 3, at the 70th annual University Film & Video Association (UFVA) Conference, held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This international competition is part of Kodak’s long-held commitment to encourage and foster the next generation of filmmakers and honors students who demonstrate exemplary skills and creativity in the art of motion pictures.

Held in conjunction with the University Film & Video Foundation (UFVF), the 501c(3) arm of the UFVA, which promotes worldwide education, research, innovation and charitable activities in the arts and sciences of moving images and aural communication, this competition is open to collegiate students at the undergraduate and graduate levels of accredited film programs.

This year’s competition received a record number of entries and, due to an increase in submissions of outstanding movies shot on film, an honorable mention category was added to the KODAK Vision Award, celebrating the artistry of using real film.

“We are excited to be supporting the next generation of motion picture artists,” said Steve Bellamy, president of Motion Picture and Entertainment at Kodak.  “In this, our 25th year of supporting emerging filmmakers, we are deeply committed to curating the best-of-the-best of next-generation motion picture icons.  Video cameras have come so far and have wonderful utility.  A huge number of talented people shoot video and we are finding a great niche among them who want to get into film.  The number of submissions to this year’s competition shot on film have doubled!”

Added Norman Hollyn, professor at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and president of the UFVF, “Congratulations to all of the finalists of the UFVA/Kodak Scholarship program. The UFVA’s mission is the advancement of the teaching of the art and craft of the cinematic arts. The high quality of these works shows just how valuable the mentorship provided in film schools continues to be, even in this DIY world. I am proud that Kodak has been our long-time partner in this mission and am thrilled to work with them to award these scholarships. Kodak’s dedication to the art of motion pictures is well known. It is also important to acknowledge the company’s commitment to the scholarship and teaching of the art.”

Selected from among 131 entries from across the country and around the world, the 2016 winners are:

KODAK Student Cinematography Scholarship Awards:

·         KODAK Vision Award — $3,000 Tuition Scholarship Award & $5,000 KODAK Motion Picture Product Grant. To qualify for this award, a minimum of 50 percent of the submission was required to be shot on film. DP Jomo Fray, Worcester, Mass., a graduate student at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, was selected for his drama Get Out Fast, which was shot on s16mm and Super 8, using a mix of KODAK VISION3 color negative film, s16mm 250D and 500T and s8 500T. Says Fray, “The film required a look that was at once organic and also electric. After shooting countless tests, that could only truly be achieved by shooting on film.” In this skillfully shot drama, a 15-year-old boy remembers his best friend, Coyote Boy, a restless, train-hopping drifter who has gone missing from their small town.

·         First Place — $3,000 Tuition Scholarship Award & $5,000 KODAK Motion Picture Product Grant. Writer-director-DP Sonja Tsypin, New York, N.Y., an undergrad at Bard College in Hudson, N.Y., was chosen for her dramatic narrative Powder Room and will be attending the American Film Institute as a cinematography fellow in the fall. Her half-hour drama follows Vera, star of a wildly popular online video channel who hasn’t left her apartment in over four years, her struggle with confronting her past and, ultimately, facing herself.

·         KODAK Vision Award, Honorable Mention — $1,000 Tuition Scholarship Award & $500 KODAK Motion Picture Product Grant. Shot on KODAK VISION3 s16mm 200T color negative film, cinematographer Thomas Doran, Cardiff, Wales, received an honorable mention for his fantasy short The Sea, the God and the Man.  Doran is studying at the National Film and Television School in the U.K.  In the film, an ancient Asian god of water, abandoned by his worshippers, returns to the boat that brought him west many years prior in search of new followers. There, he finds a man who has made the vessel his home in order to escape the encroaching threat of urbanization.

KODAK Student Scholarship Awards:

·        Gold Award — $5,000 Tuition Scholarship Award & $5,000 KODAK Motion Picture Product Grant. Cinematographer and director Lauren Gillis Mueller hails from Portland, Ore., and is studying at Duke University, Durham, N.C. Her docu-fiction The Gibbons of Santa Clarita takes a look at the psychological effects captivity can have on the endangered ape species, Gibbons.

·        Silver Award — $3,000 Tuition Scholarship Award & $3,000 KODAK Motion Picture Product Grant. Nathan Hughes-Berry, from Liverpool, England, and a graduate student at York University in Toronto, directed and produced The Substitute. In this horror-thriller, a young teacher takes a job at an unusual private school where she soon discovers the boys have a sinister power over the girls … Could an ominous locked door at the back of the classroom be causing the strange behavior?

·        Bronze Award — $2,000 Tuition Scholarship Award & $3,000 KODAK Motion Picture Product Grant. Mounia Akl, Beirut, Lebanon, studying for her masters in fine arts at New York’s Columbia University School of the Arts, wrote and directed Submarine. In this thoughtful drama, under the imminent threat of Lebanon’s garbage crisis, a young woman refuses to evacuate, clinging to whatever remains of home.

Kodak has long held a deep commitment to supporting future filmmakers and encouraging excellence in the field of motion picture education through many initiatives and 2016 marked the 25th anniversary of this scholarship program.  The company's ongoing efforts encompass a range of opportunities, which students and educators can use to enrich their knowledge of the art and craft of filmmaking, including educational materials and discounts; and sponsorship of film festivals, awards, seminars and student showcases.

"Remembering the Masters" at Camerimage honors Haskel Wexler and Vilos Zsigmond

REMEMBERING THE MASTERS: HASKELL WEXLER AND VILMOS ZSIGMOND

From its first editions Camerimage Festival became a platform for discussion about the past, the present, and the future of cinema. By inviting hundreds of cinematographers and other film industry professionals from all over the world, we encouraged dialogue and exchange of ideas, as well as confronting oneself with the art of the best and most distinguished filmmakers around. Thus came “Remembering the Masters”, the section commenced in 2012 and is dedicated to the medium's greatest visual poets. It is an extension of our mission, and simultaneously an act of emphasizing the way the past informs the future.

„Remembering the Masters” became a celebrated Camerimage section, both by the industry professionals and the participants who do not work in the world of film. Throughout the years we have presented masterpieces shot by Jerzy Lipman, John Alcott, Zygmunt Samosiuk, Néstor Almendros and Gunnar Fischer, among others. This year the section will be somewhat special, as it will be entirely devoted to the work of Haskell Wexler and Vilmos Zsigmond, two universally acclaimed masters of light and frame, recipients of Camerimage Lifetime Achievement Awards and our dearest friends, who passed away a couple of months ago, leaving us all with countless, brilliant cinematic images, and the sadness of knowing that we will never see them again in person.

You can find more about the careers and films of Haskell Wexler and Vilmos Zsigmond in essays written by David Heuring (HERE and HERE), but let us now invite you to the Camerimage screenings of their classic films.

We will show three works of Haskell Wexler: Miloš Forman'sOne Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Norman Jewison'sIn the Heat of the Night, and Mike Nichols'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; all three being landmark cinematic achievements, whether in displaying non-conformist attitudes, racial tensions in the U.S., or the beauty of black-and-white cinematography. For the last one, Wexler was awarded with the first of the two Oscars® in his career.

As a tribute to Vilmos Zsigmond, we will also screen three films. Camerimage participants will have the opportunity of seeing Robert Altman'sMcCabe & Mrs. Miller, John Boorman'sDeliverance, and Michael Cimino'sThe Deer Hunter on big screen. Each of the projects is widely different from another, and applying various means of cinematic expression – a revisionist western, an intense tale of survival, a poignant anti-war manifesto – all of them, however, being perfect encapsulations of the magic of cinema.

Out of Wexler's and Zsigmond's visions “New Hollywood” of 1970s was born, remaining to this day a guiding light for all politically and socially oriented filmmakers who make their pictures to start a meaningful dialogue with the audiences.

We will post more information about the dates and screening venues in the upcoming months, together with the details of the program of the 24th edition of Camerimage.

24th Camerimage will be held in Bydgoszcz

from the 12th through 19th November 2016

The story of a girl preparing for the fight of her life – told by István Kovács – titled “The Sound of Concrete” (Betonzaj) won the main Award, the Golden BuSho of the 12th Budapest International Short Film Festival on Saturday evening. As a small surprise – for until this time it has not occurred that two Hungarian creations were among the best – the Silver BuSho went to Áron Ferenczik’s “Mr. Miller” (Szabó úr), that presented the strange life of a man who suffers from the loss of his senses. The Bronze BuSho was awarded to a Bulgarian-German co-production “Getting Fat in a Healthy Way”, directed by Kevork Aslanyan, in which a tragical accident disturbs the gravitational field of the Earth.

The moderators announced in the lead-in of the Award Ceremony held in Puskin Cinema, that this year 74 shorts were selected in the competition programme; the total number of submissions was 1189. The audience could watch this last week in Puskin Cinema together with the international Jury and at the repeated screenings in Corvin Club, or at the venues in the country side and over the border. The winners were selected from among these, and they could bring the statuettes made by Solide Art. The members of the international Jury were: Nadya Bakuradze, Russian experimental film maker and video artist, Christian Inaraja Genís, artist and illustrator from Catalunya, the Hungarian jury member this year was Teréz Koncz, creative producer and director, and our permanent member of the jury, Wolfgang Leis.

First, the members of the Student Jury – delegated by 4 higher education institutions (University of Theatre and Film Arts, Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Eötvös Loránd Science University, Metropolitan University) – were called to the stage who thanked for the opportunity to take part in the Festival and gave short reasoning for their decisions. They deemed an Italian picture,Bellissima as best fiction, the second episode of the great Austrian come-backer, Metube 2 as best experimental short, and Beyond by Milán Kopasz as best animation.

These were followed by the category prizes of the International Jury, at first those were announced who could not take part in the ceremony in person. This year saw a very strong competition in animation, and Koji Yamamura’s work, Satie’s “Parade” (Japan) triumphed. The prize for best idea/screenplay went well-deservedly to We Can't Live Without Cosmos, Konstantin Bronzit’s multiple award winner animation and also Oscar nominee. According to the Jury their easiest task was to decide about the best Comedy: this prize was given to The black bear, made in the co-production of France and Belgium. The Prize for Best Cinematography went to the animation Edmond directed by Nina Gantz, a production of the Netherlands. The unforgettable performance of Julia Pointner child actress in Patrick Vollrath’ s Alles wird gut , an Austrian production, was honoured by the award for Best Performance. The Special Prize of Búgócsiga, the venue in Sopron was given Kata Oláh (a 3-day excursion for 2 persons to Sopron combined with an audience meeting) for her work, En Passant. The audience award this year was presented to Balázs Simonyi’sIndián.

After this the awardees present were asked to accept their prizes. For the second time this year the prize of the Media Council and Authority of the National Media and Telecommunication –that is a 2 x 500 thousand forints award– was given for the best Hungarian animation and fiction work. The prizes were handed over by Tamás Kollarik, Member of the Media Council, and Ferenc Varsányi, the president of the Animation Jury of the Media Council. The best Hungarian animation in 2016 at the 12th BuSho Festival wasCosmic Jacuzzi by Anikó Takács, and the best short feature was the work of István Kovács, Betonzaj. Also for the second time among the prizes that was offered by Sziget Ltd. a weekly pass for a 3-member mini crew with filming permission on the Sziget festival in 2017. Gyöngyi Fazekas took this prize for her work Képzavar (Catachresis). The Special Mention of the Jury and a special statuette was given to Ábel Visky forRomanian Sunrise. The BuSho Award 2016 for Best Experimental was given to Reinhold Bidner (being the third Austrian awarded) for Ex Terrat. He was present at the Festival all week, and –as he later told us– he would stay in Budapest for 2 months as a grantee of a study visit!

Before the announcement of the winners of the main prizes, Christian Inaraja Genis was invited to the stage to share the opinion and experience of the Jury about the Festival. After thanking for the participants for their work, he briefly added that –even though they could have decided in a different way– this decision is theirs and they are proud of it. Then the winners of the main prizes were announced along with a short evaluation of the jury.

“For a simple love story created by surrealistic circumstances and magical dedication.” The Bronze BuSho prize 2016 was awarded to:

Getting Fat In A Healthy Way, Kevork Aslanyan (Bulgaria-Germany).

“For the most thought- provoking film in the competition.” and thus the winner of the Silver BuSho 2016:

Mr. Miller, by Áron Ferenczik (Hungary).

Finally the International Jury gave the following reasoning for the winner of the Golden BuSho 2016: “For creating the most powerful film. Which combines the most powerful character, storytelling and team effort in the competition.”

The main award of the 12th BuSho was handed over to István Kovács for The Sound of Concrete (Betonzaj).

Finally, thanks were given to the sponsors for making it possible to organize the event for the 12th time: The Central European Initiative, Hungarian National Film Fund, Hungarian Academy of Arts, Balassi Institute, Pensum, Biogroup Hungary LLC, the Austrian Culture Forum, the Embassy of Israel, the Italian Culture Institute of Budapest, and Staropramen. The cooperative partner was the Budapest Festival and Tourism Center. The Award Sponsors were Solide Art – the creator of the main prizes, National Media and Infocommunications Authority, Sziget LLC and Búgócsiga from Sopron. The Media partners of the Festival are Filmvilág, Filmtekercs, Fotovideo Magazines and Radio Klub.

Subsequently the awardees, the international guests, the members of the Student and the International Jury and the staff members were invited up to the stage for a group picture. After the closing ceremony, the audience could watch some of the winners and as the last stage of the festival a concert given by “Zsuzsi mosolyog” was presented in Fészek Klub.

Let’s meet at the 12th anniversary BuSho International Short Film Festival in 2017!
