Damien Chazelle Acceptance Speech: Thank you so much. This is such an honor. I just want to first thank my fellow nominees. I was absolutely honored and floored to be in your company this year. So, Barry, Kenny, Mel, Denis—like, my eyes are searching, but I know you’re here somewhere. Just thank you for what incredible filmmakers you are and for inspiring me with your work every day. I want to thank the people who helped me make this movie. My crew, my team, everyone at Lionsgate for taking a chance on it. Ryan and Emma, for bringing it to life. John, for acting alongside them and now doing me very proud here on the stage. Thank you, John. And I want to thank Justin, who I’ve known since we were both 17, 18, I think. Justin, thank you for riding with me on this and carrying this dream forward and for never giving up. Thank you. I want to thank my family—my parents are in the crowd, my sister Anna—thank you for always believing in me. And finally, I want to thank Olivia, my love, sitting there. This was a movie about love, and I was lucky enough to fall in love while making it. And it means the world to me that you’re here sharing this with me. Thank you. Thank you so much.

Salinas

Award-winning journalist and co-anchor of “Noticiero Univsion” María Elena Salinas will be inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Broadcasting Hall of Fame at the 2017 NAB Show Television Luncheon on Monday, April 24 in Las Vegas.

Salinas began her journalism career in 1981 as a reporter, anchor and public affairs host at Univision’s KMEX-34 in Los Angeles. Her daily reporting to the growing Hispanic community in Southern California led to her joining Jorge Ramos as co-anchor of the national Spanish language news program “Noticiero Univision” in 1987.

In 2015, Salinas received a Peabody Award, Walter Cronkite Award, an Emmy and Gracie for her documentary special "Entre el abandono y el rechazo" (Between Abandonment and Rejection), a prime-time report on the exodus of Central American children to the United States. In 2016, she was the recipient of the Mickey Leland Humanitarian award, and in 2012, she became the first Latina to receive an Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

“María Elena Salinas is an outstanding example of the profound effect broadcast television can have on the audiences it serves,” said NAB Executive Vice President of Television Marcellus Alexander. “María has a deep connection to the needs of the Latino community, and she represents their interests on and off the screen.”

In addition to her journalism career, Salinas has served as the spokeswoman for the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) for nearly two decades during their campaign to increase Latino voter engagement. NALEO assists immigrants with the American citizenship process, including registering to vote and participating in politics. For her work with the organization, she has been recognized by National Organization for Women, Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, among others. Salinas was also honored with the Ruben Salazar Award for Communications from the National Council of La Raza.

Legendary executive producer and writer Chuck Lorre joined the Hall of Fame in 2016. Previous NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame television inductees include Shonda Rhimes, “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “American Idol,” Betty White, Garry Marshall, “Meet The Press,” Bob Newhart, “The Tonight Show,” “Saturday Night Live,” Ted Koppel, “M*A*S*H,” “60 Minutes,” “The Today Show,” and “Star Trek.”

Akward Moment at 2017 Oscars And the winner is ... opps, sorry about that!

image2.jpeg

We weren't trying to be funny -- It was a genuine f***up --

The mistaken announcement that LaLaLand had won best picture and the embarassed correction by co-awarder Warren Beatty naming Moonlighting as the real winner was a most appropriate capstone to the "craziest Oscars ever".
Explanation: he was handed the wrong envelope -- which named Emma Stone as best actress --. which was misinterpreted by co-awarder Faye Dunaway as the Best Picture award.  Nice to see the stars of Bonnie and Clyde (1967!) reunited here on stage fifty years later, but ~~ How slipshod can you get? -- misreading Best Actress as "Best Film" -- (Lady Faye, mincing no words, later confessed at a post gala party "I really f****d up!)

Well,
the mistake was immediately spotted evoking a moment of chaos on stage during which actors nearly forgot that they were actually supposed ro be using their stage time to attack Donald Trump, as Warren and Faye flubbed the dub.
The Moonlight  team then took the stage to bask in the glory of a minor low budget black underdog beating out a highly favored big budget white production at the wire. But even director Barry Jenkins admitted that it seemed like a dream ... surreal!
Moonlight picked up not only the Best Picture award, but also a best supporting actor Oscar for Black Muslim rapper Mahershala Ali, born in Oakland -- not exactly an immigrant, but nevertheless a declared follower of Allah.  So, take that Mr. Trump!
Also quite fitting that Emma Stone clutching her Oscar statuette for dear life, called this the  "Craziest Oscars ever".

Emma's being declared Best actress over the likes of
(a) Isabelle Huppert in ELLE or
(b) Natalie Portman in JACKIE was truly crazy if not simply dim-witted.
Huppert and Portman's work in their respective films was a light year above and beyond Stone's routine turn in Lalaland, and indicates that the Academy Awards have nothing to with quality but far more to do with RightThink in the Orwellian sense, and moreover that senility is rampant among the selectors.
There is no basis even for discussion between Ms. Stone's pallid  performance in TralalaLand and the superb performances of Huppert and Portman in the films mentioned.
Moreover, the exclusion of Elle and Jackie from the Best Film category in favor  of far lesser films is further evidence that the Oscars are next to meaningless in terms of assessment of the annual crop of films and reflect extreme lack of taste, hardening of the arteries, and deplorable ignorance of world cinema.
As for Chazelle's direction of this thoroughly misguided imitation missile, one can only say: "What direction? -- Give us a break. Any other director would have been more worthy.  Paul Verhoeven, director of Elle wasn't even nominated.
The biggest Joke of all on the public was not the envelope switch but the entire Oscar Ceremony which was basically a clumsy apology for racism with no underlying concept of film quality. As my Ukrainian imigrant grandmother would say: Feh!

Celebrating Asian Cinema Excellence with Finest Filmmakers

The 15th Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum concluded today with the Awards Presentation Ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Filmmakers, leading film financiers and industry professionals from across the world attended to celebrate this HAF milestone, and the presentation of 14 awards that recognise the promising and potential of remarkable film projects.

Over the past three days, HAF attracted leading film financers, producers, distributors and buyers across the world, connecting them with talented filmmakers through business meetings and seminar, pitching and networking events: the newly launched Work-in-Progress Lab facilitated projects already in production to secure post-production funds, sales agents or film festival support; Operation Greenlight helped foster talented local directors to make their debut feature film; sponsored by iQIYI the seminar "New Opportunities in the Explosive Growth of Online Entertainment" invited respected industry leaders to share fruitful insights of latest market trends, and enriching content for on-line platforms.

Celebrating Asian Cinema Excellence

Over the years, HAF has been at the forefront in fostering quality movies and has nurtured a significant number of film projects generating critical acclaim and industry recognition. This year, the 14 award winners were selected from a total of 33 film projects across 15 countries and regions, featuring young emerging directors developing their first feature films. Many of the films are family-driven projects that touch on contemporary social issues, while some others give voice to minorities in society. One observable trend for example, is the increase in the number of women filmmakers.

The total value of the awards presented amounted to approximately HK$1,588,000 (US$204,600) in cash and value in-kind, thanks to the generous support of various sponsors and partners.

1. HAF Awards (Presented by Create HK, Hong Kong Film Development Fund and HAF)

Mr. Jerry LIU, Head of Create Hong Kong kicked off the ceremony by presenting two HAF Awards to Impossible Split(Hong Kong) and NARAtive Film 2017-2018 - Yuko(Japan) for Hong Kong Project and non-Hong Kong Project categories respectively. Each project will receive a cash prize of HK$150,000 (approx.US$19,300) in recognition of their originality and creativity.

2. iQIYI's Special Award (Presented by iQIYI)

HAF's Premium Sponsor for the third year in a row, iQIYI presented the iQIYI’s Special Award to The Patient (China), offering a cash award of HK$100,000 (approx.US$12,900) to encourage and support film talents from the Chinese speaking territories.

3. mm2 Award (Presented by mm2 Asia Limited)                                                                                Forget You, Still Love You? (Hong Kong) was honoured the mm2 Award which aims to embrace Chinese-language film projects that exhibit good commercial and artistic quality. The winner will receive the cash award of HK$100,000 (approx.US$12,900).

4. HAF/FOX Project Award                                                                                                    (Presented by Fox Networks Group and Fox International Productions)

Established to strengthen the development of Chinese-language cinema, the HAF/FOX Project Award went to Drifting Lives (China). The winning project will receive cash award of US$10,000 (approx.HK$78,000) and a development contract with FOX.

5. Wouter Barendrecht Award                                                                                           (Presented by Wouter Barendrecht Film Foundation, Create Hong Kong and Hong Kong Film Development Fund)

The 48FILM Festival is open to everyone: beginner to professional, from all nations. The competition opens in January and closes late November. Once registered, a competing team selects a genre and when to start the clock. 48FILM Project provides three elements that are required to be included: a character, a line, and a prop. Filmmakers then have 48 hours to create a short film in English or with English subtitles that is four to seven minutes in length and upload it to www.48filmproject.com/competition/2017/register

With entries from more than 130 countries of the world, the festival attracted some of the industry’s top decision makers for its 2016 Jury, including:

Scott Adler (award-winning producer "The Taking of Deborah Logan", “The Vault"), Ryan Carnes (award-winning actor and producer, known for "Letters from Iwo Jima", directed by Clint Eastwood, "Doctor Who" and "Desperate Housewives"), Alex Cutler (Producer of Henry Barrial’s award-winning feature "PIG", "Don Peyote" with Anne Hathaway, and "UNTOGETHER" starring Ben Mendelsohn, Jamie Dornan.), Luke Daniels (award-winning producer of a string of Hollywood hits include "Yoga Hosers", "Outlaws and Angels", "Punching Henry", and "The Tiger Hunter"), Brandon K. The European Film Academy awards the Plaza de España in Seville the title “Treasure of European Film Culture”.

Originally designed and built as the main symbol for and most ambitious project of the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition world’s fair, Plaza de España is one of Seville's most iconic locations.

With its mix of 1920s Art Deco, Neo-Renaissance, and Neo-Mudéjar styles, Plaza de España has served as the set for various films from STAR WARS to THE DICTATOR. Actors who have shot here include Vittorio de Sica, Sean Connery and, of course, Peter O’Toole.

Above all, it is forever linked to the history of cinema by its role in David Lean's unforgettable epic LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, where it served as the English army headquarters and officers' club in Cairo.

During a ceremony in November, held in co-operation with the Andalucía Film Commission supported by the Regional Minister for Tourism and Sport, the Mayor of Sevilla and the Public Company of Radio and Television of Andalusia, a special “Treasure of European Film Culture” emblem will be inaugurated at the location. This will be on the occasion of the announcement of the nominations for the European Film Awards (EFAs), which annually takes place in Seville.

With this title the European Film Academy wishes to raise public awareness for places of a symbolic nature for European cinema, places of historical value that need to be maintained and protected not just now but also for generations to come.

Plaza de España is the ninth location to be awarded by the European Film Academy. The first seight institutions that were adopted to be part of the “Treasures of European Film Culture” list are:

The Eisenstein Memorial Centre in Moscow
The House of the brothers Lumière in Lyon
The Bergman Center in Faro
The World of Tonino Guerra in Pennabilli
The Potemkin Stairs in Odessa
The Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel
The Sergei Parajanov Museum in Yerevan
The Collegiate Church of Sant Vicenç in Cardona

The list of Treasures of European Film Culture will continue to be added to over the years to include both film institutions and places that can be visited such as the Plaza de España in Seville.
