Un Certain Regard 2018 presented 18 films in competition. 6 of them were first films. The Opening film was DONBASS by Sergei Loznitsa.
Under the presidency of Benicio Del Toro (Puerto Rican-American actor), the Jury was comprised of Annemarie Jacir (Palestinian director and writer), Kantemir Balagov (Russian director), Virginie Ledoyen (French actress) and Julie Huntsinger (American executive director, Telluride Film Festival).

We feel that out of 2000 films considered by the Festival, the 18 we saw in UN CERTAIN REGARD from Argentina to China were all in their own way winners. Over the past 10 days, we were extremely impressed by the high quality of the work presented, but in the end we were the most moved by the following 5 films. »

Queer Palm and Camera d’Or to Lukas Dhont's "Girl"

Queer Palm Awards 2018 - ©Moira Sullivan

An event that Cannes has still not acknowledged as an official parallel event even if it at Berlin and Venice is the “Queer Palm Award”. This is important in the struggle for inclusion of LGBTQI representation. This year the award went to "Girl" - Lukas Dhont, a bold narrative on a trans teen ballerina (Victor Polster). Selected for “Un Certain Regard” the film won best artistic interpretation (Victor Polster) - non-gender specific for the first time. It is also the Camera d’Or recipient.

Carolina Markowicz's “O Orfao” (The Orphan, Brazil) won the short film prize. Part of the Director’s Fortnight it chronicles the return of an adopted boy by a couple who considers him too effeminate.

Queer Palm Jury president French producer Sylvie Pialat led a team consisting of Guadalajara Film Festival programmer Pepe Ruiloba, French producer Dounia Sichov, “A Taste of Ink” director Morgan Simon and “The Hollywood Reporter “film critic Boyd van Hoeij. CAPHARNAÜM
by Nadine Labaki
(Official Competition)

CAPHARNAÜM, Prix œcuménique 2018
Throughout the Competition, it is women and children, the immigrants and outcasts, who have shown by their perseverance and ingenuity, love and courage, the full possibility of the human spirit.
Zain, a 12 year old boy is suing his parents for giving him life. Holding nothing back, the director meets the extreme plight of children with fearless humanity.

And a SpecialMention to :

BLACKKKLANSMAN
by Spike Lee
(Official Competition)

The Jury commends BlacKkKlansman, a wake-up call about continuing racism not only in the USA, but for the wider world. Told through humour and horror, this film condemns the misappropriation of religion in the cause of hatred.

APSA ANNOUNCES NEW AWARD CATEGORY & INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCE

Today, we announced that a new music award category will debut at this year’s Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

The announcement was made at an APSA Academy event at Cannes Film Festival, which was attended by international industry guests and APSA Academy members with titles currently in Cannes Competition and Un Certain Regard.

For the first time, five music practitioners from across the Asia Pacific will be nominated for the new APSA award. A new specialist International Jury will determine the winner. The inaugural winner will be presented with their APSA at the 12th annual awards ceremony in Brisbane, Australia on 29 November, 2018.

Music is an incredibly powerful medium and one that lies at the heart of cultural expression. This is a hugely exciting development for us and we look forward to expanding the awards to honour the artistry of music in film.

This follows the announcement of APSA’s exciting new alliance with our Latin American counterpart, the Premios Platino del Cine Iberoamericano Awards (Platino Awards).

Encompassing 93 countries and areas across five continents, our alliance will better connect Ibero-America and the Asia Pacific through cinema. The alliance will amplify co-production opportunities, promote cross-cultural dialogue and provide a stronger platform to support the outstanding and diverse cinematic works from both regions.

Anchoring the alliance is a reciprocal agreement to represent the regions on each award ceremony’s jury. An Asia Pacific jury member will sit on the sixth edition of The Platino Awards in 2019, and a filmmaker from Ibero-America will be appointed to the APSA International Jury in 2018.

Finally, we congratulate the EFA Young Audience Award winner Wallay. Australia took part in the award for the first time. The event saw 30 Brisbane teenagers watching, discussing and voting on three new European films as part of a global youth jury.

Connect with us on Facebook and Twitter to be the first to hear the latest from the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Writers can't judge writers.  Filmmakers can't judge filmmakers. Everyone receives a massive amount of feedback.

WORLD PEACE & TOLERANCE BRUNCH HELD AT AMERICAN PAVILION

Films with the late Peter O’Toole and Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges honored during Festival de Cannes with a United Nations supported organization having ECOSOC status.

New Generation In Action’s AFI World Peace Initiative hosted the “World Peace & Tolerance Awards Brunch during Festival de Cannes on May 15th, at the American Pavilion where global “Films of Purpose” where honored to participate in the year round program to promote, exhibit, and enlighten the general population by promoting the United Nation's “Leave No One Behind 2030.”

The United Nations supported organization with ECOSOC status utilizes Greta Joanne Entertainment a production, sales, buyer, and boutique distribution arm to assist in the global campaign to help films during the Festival de Cannes, and exhibitions of films privately and in the Marche du Film.

Each film will be utilized in a year round thematic program, in support of partnerships with other non government organizations, country support, not for profits, theaters, on line demand platforms, school/universities, museums, and creative exhibitions.

The following films were chosen to receive merit and participate in the year round thematic program.

“Our program was created in a needed time when minorities and representation for the Indigenous people, world peace, Middle East, Africa, and environmental filmmakers were not represented and distribution was not “popular,” or often times considered commercial. We have been around since 2012, working one film at a time. This year during Festival de Cannes, I am pleased to finally see cross promotions of minorities and the celebrities demanding a different voice be heard. This includes the role of women. Let our voices be heard.” Stated Founder and President of New Generation In Action’s AFI World Peace Initiative, and Greta Joanne Entertainment Princess Dame Angelique Monét
