Ricardo Darín, Donostia Award 2017

Ricardo Darín started acting in TV series at only five years of age. His film career began in 1979 with Julio Porter (La carpa del amor) and Adolfo Aristarain (La playa del amor), a medium he alternated with award-winning performances on the small screen, including Nosotros y los miedos, Compromiso and Mi cuñado. In the 80s and 90s he worked yet again with Aristarain (The Stranger, 1987), Alberto Lecchi (Perdido por perdido, 1993) and Eduardo Mignogna (El Faro – The Lighthouse, 1998) and Juan José Campanella (El mismo amor, la misma lluvia – Same Love, Same Rain, 1999); but it is, above all, with Nueve reinas (Nine Queens, 2000), Fabián Bielinsky’s directorial debut, that started to earn him international recognition.

He later continued with essential Latin American and Spanish titles like El hijo de la novia (Son of the Bride, 2001, nominee for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award), Luna de Avellaneda (Moon of Avellaneda,2004) and El secreto de sus ojos (The Secret in Their Eyes, 2009, Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award), all three directed by Juan José Campanella. In 2007 he made his directorial debut with the film La señal alongside Martín Hodara, with whom he repeated the experience this year on Nieve negra(Black Snow).

He was a toy inventor in La educación de las hadas (The Education of Fairies, José Luis Cuerda, 2006); the father of an intersexual teenager in XXY (Lucía Puenzo, 2007); a legendary thief in El baile de la Victoria(The Dancer and the Thief, Fernando Trueba, 2009); the owner of a hardware store in Un cuento chino(Chinese Take-Away, 2011) and a pilot in Capitán Kóblic (Kóblic, 2016), both by Sebastián Borenzstein; an unqualified lawyer in Carancho (2010) and a priest in Elefante Blanco (White Elephant, 2012), both helmed by Pablo Trapero. He has also worked on two occasions with Cesc Gay: after playing a man cheated on by his wife in Una pistola en cada mano (A Gun in Each Hand, 2012), he embodied an actor diagnosed with terminal cancer in Truman (2015).

His filmography also includes the role of a professor of Criminal Law in Tesis sobre un homicidio (Thesis on a Homicide, Hernán Goldfrid, 2012), a desperate father in Séptimo (7th Floor, Patxi Amezcua, 2013), an explosives expert in Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales, Damián Szifron, 2014), which competed in Cannes and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, and his part as the President of Argentina in La cordillera (The Summit). He is also a member of the cast on the latest film by the Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, as yet untitled, on which he will share the credits with Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem.

In the words of the moviemaker Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, “all of the characters he plays seem to have been especially written for him and only for him to play them. Having watched the film, and thinking back over it, you can’t imagine how anyone other than Darín could truly have played that character. We have said that cinema lends transparency to reality. Darín lends transparency to the character he embodies. We feel him, he moves us, through something we don’t see: the actor. We only see his character. That’s why we never tire of his films.”

The presence of his films in San Sebastian and his visits to the city have been continuous since 2001, when La fuga (Eduardo Mignogna) competed in the Official Selection, where he also presented El aura (The Aura, 2005), his second collaboration with Bielinsky. In 2008 Amorosa soledad (Lovely Loneliness, Martín Carranza and Victoria Galardi) was presented in Zabaltegi-New Directors. In 2009 he participated twice with El secreto de sus ojos (The Secret in Their Eyes) in competition and El baile de la Victoria (The Dancer and the Thief), in a special screening. Having been shown at Cannes, Carancho was screened as part of Pearls in 2010 and Elefante Blanco (White Elephant)premiered in Un Certain Regard, was part of the Made in Spain selection in 2012, the section which also saw the screening of Una pistola en cada mano (A Gun in Each Hand). That year he also sat on the Official Jury which awarded the Golden Shell to François Ozon’s Dans la maison (In the House). In 2013 he played the deceased grandfather of Violet (Luiso Berdejo), selected for Zabaltegi. In 2014 he presented in Pearls Relatos Salvajes, winner of the Audience Award for Best European Film, and in 2015 he returned to the Official Selection with Truman (2015), carrying off the Silver Shell for Best Actor ex-aequo with Javier Cámara.

In an interview with the journalist Nuria Vidal, Darín recalled the premiere of Truman in San Sebastian: “The audience reaction was incredible, they were laughing at the funny bits and crying at the sad ones (...). Suddenly everything we’d done took on new meaning, everything we had invested in the story found its climax at the Kursaal. Having the opportunity to watch it with all that concentrated energy is something I treasure and will carry with me for the rest of the journey. You have it on you and can’t work out how to get rid of it and I’m not sure I want to”.

The Donostia Award culminates a list of more than 20 national and international wards including five Silver Condors, two Konex, two Sur by the Argentine Academy of Cinematography Arts and Sciences Awards, a Goya, a José María Forqué, a Gaudí, a CEC (Cinema Writers Circle) award, a Feroz, a Platino Audience Award, a Sant Jordi, awards at the Valladolid, Havana and Biarritz festivals, the aforementioned Silver Shell in San Sebastian, the Honorary Platino received last year and the Gold Medal for Merits in the Fine Arts he will receive this year. All recognise the extraordinary career of an actor who has worked indistinctly in television, cinema and theatre (with the award-winning Algo en común, Art and Escenas de la vida conyugal).

OIAF ANNOUNCES 2017 COMPETITION WINNERSThe Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF), North America’s leading animation film festival, announced the winners of its 2017 Official Competition today at an awards ceremony held at Saint Brigid’s Centre for the Arts. The OIAF received a total of 1992 entries and selected 105 short films and 5 feature films from 85 different countries.

The Nelvana Grand Prize for Independent Short went to Nikita Diakur’s Ugly, a simulated short film about two beings trying to find peace in a dystopic neighborhood. The Grand Prize for Features went to the surrealist romantic comedy  Night Is Short, Walk on Girl, directed by Masaaki Yuasa. Yuasa made OIAF history this year by becoming the first filmmaker to have two nominations in the features category, with his film Lu Over the Wall also in competition.

This year’s Short, Feature and Young Audiences Competition screenings were judged by three official juries. The Competition Short Jury featured illustrator, art and animation director Janice Nadeau (Canada), Marta Pajek (Poland), and Theodore Ushev (Bulgaria/Canada), animator and winner of last year’s Cartoon Network Award for Best Narrative Short Animation (Blind Vaysha). The Competition Feature Jury comprised of the award-winning director and writer of Child Dream Christophe Gérard (France), former Grand Prize winner and animator Peter Millard (UK), and animation director and optical effects specialist Elise Simard (Canada). The third jury is comprised of Ottawa-area children between the ages of 8 and 12 who judged the Young Audiences: Preschool and Ages 6-12 Competitions. In addition, we also had members of the Canadian media pick a winner for our Media prize, with Di Golding, Ramin S. Khanjani, and Pat Mullen awarding The Tesla World Light.

A selection of the Festival’s award-winning films will be screened on Sunday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. in the Best of OIAF 17 screening at the ByTowne Cinema (325 Rideau Street). Tickets are available online at www.animationfestival.ca and will be sold at the Box Office.

´The disaster artist´wins San Sebastian´s Golden Shell

`The disaster artist' directed by James Franco won yesterday the Golden Shell Award for best picture at the 65th San Sebastian Film Festival.

James Franco’s The Disaster Artist is the true story of the making of the film The Room, which has been called "the Citizen Kane of bad movies". Tommy Wiseau’s cult classic has been screening to sold-out audiences nationwide for more than a decade. The Disaster Artist is a buddy comedy about two outsiders chasing a dream. When the world rejects them, they decide to make their own movie – and it’s a movie so wonderfully awful due to its unintentional hilarious moments, meandering plots and terrible acting.

World Soundtrack Awards and Film Fest Gent present packed music programme

 Visual_World_Soundtrack_Awards_2017.191236.112457.jpg

The spotlight shines on music more than ever during this 44th edition of Film Fest Gent. The 17th World Soundtrack Awards Gala & Concert welcomes a batch of award-winning international composers and central guests Terence Blanchard, Joe Kraemer and David Shire to Ghent. There’s also the Symphonic Jazz in Film Concert, such industry events as the Film Music Seminar and WSA Industry Day and a close collaboration with arts centre Vooruit exploring the fringes of cinema and music.

On 18 October, the annual World Soundtrack Awards Gala & Concert celebrates outstanding achievements in scoring music for motion pictures and TV series by handing out a total of eight awards including the Public Choice Award, voted for by film music fans out of more than 109 countries around the world.

Among the nominees for TV Composer of the Year, Dave Porter (‘Better Call Saul’), Rupert Gregson-Williams (‘The Crown’), Mac Quayle (‘Mr. Robot’ – to be confirmed) and Kyle Dixon ('Stranger Things'– to be confirmed) will attend the awards night. Also joining are Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominee Dustin O’Halloran (‘Lion’) and Justin Hurwitz ('La La Land'– to be confirmed), both nominated as Film Composer of the Year.

Attendees Diego Navarro (‘Pasaje al amanecer’) and Alejandro Vivas (‘El jugador de ajedrez’) are in the running for the Public Choice Award, while Discovery Award nominees Michael Abels (‘Get Out’), Dan Jones (‘Lady Macbeth’), Rael Jones (‘My Cousin Rachel’) and Hauschka (‘Lion’) are coming to Ghent, too.

David Shire (‘The Conversation’, ‘The Taking of Pelham One Two Three’) will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award during the WSA Gala, which is followed by a film music concert, concentrating on contemporary jazz in the soundtrack scenery. Central guest is Terence Blanchard, known for his long-running collaboration with director Spike Lee (‘Malcolm X’, ‘Clockers’), of whom a selection of his jazz soundtracks has also been compiled on this year’s compilation album. The concert also includes music by Joe Kraemer (‘Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation’, ‘Jack Reacher’).

Several of the nominees and prize winners will also be present during the WSA Q&A + Meet & Greet on 19 October. The Q&A, moderated by conductor Dirk Brossé and artistic director Patrick Duynslaeger, is followed by a Meet & Greet session with the composers.

Also on 19 October, the Symphonic Jazz in Film Concert will honour the best symphonic jazz soundtracks of the past century. During this true Classics Night, Brussels Philharmonic and Brussels Jazz Orchestra will be joining forces to perform jazz scores from such films as ‘The Pink Panther’, ‘Bullitt’, ‘Chinatown’ and ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’.

INDUSTRY ACTIVITIES
On 17 October, Film Fest Gent and the World Soundtrack Awards coordinate the Film Music Seminar, an annual event organised for students in film, (film) music and sound design, focusing on the relation and collaboration between composer and director. This year’s edition zooms in on the different roles of jazz music in films. Dr. Martine Huvenne and Peter Vermeersch moderate a debate with David Shire & sound designer Walter Murch ('The Conversation', ‘The English Patient’, ‘Apocalypse Now’), Joe Kraemer and Terence Blanchard.

Not to be missed by both young and established international film (music) professionals, is the WSA Industry Day on 18 October. During a number of masterclasses and panels, guest speakers such as Matt Dunkley ('Black Swan', 'Inception), Dustin O'Halloran & Hauschka and Dave Porter discuss what’s going on in the international film music industry. The one-day-programme also offers various networking opportunities and professional meetings as well as pitching sessions for composers through the 3rd Character project.

MUSIC HOT SPOT
As of this year, Arts centre Vooruit becomes the hot spot for nearly all music related events during the festival (except for the WSA concerts in the Capitole). Film Fest Gent and Vooruit present a joint programme dedicated to the cross-pollination of image and music: improvisations, new soundtracks to non-existing films and exciting live visuals, the revival of expanded cinema and even a screening of Romero’s ‘Dawn of the Dead’ with the soundtrack performed live by Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin.

On October 15, a matinee screening of atypical Italian animation shorts is organised, for which students of the Royal Conservatory in Ghent will improvise a live musical score. Meanwhile, on 18 October the workshop Watch That Sound invites young people to become acquainted with film music by creating sound and music for a film under the guidance of a music teacher.

This year, Film Fest Gent comes to a close with the screening of ‘Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami’, part of the Sound & Vision section of the festival. Presenting the best documentaries and feature films on music, this programme includes films about John Coltrane, Chavela Vargas, Morrissey, Paul McCartney, Tangerine Dream and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Outstanding performances delivered by prolific actor Stephen Tobolowsky (Groundhog Day, Memento, Deadwood, Silicon Valley) and SAG- nominated actor DJ Qualls (Road Trip, Hustle & Flow, Breading Bad, Z Nation). Exceptional script by Amanda Glassman (Dream Girl, Web Atlas, Angels and Demons).

Mountainfilm supports a record number of projects.

Mexican villagers who find themselves at the center of a deadly environmental battle. A bold simulation of life on Mars. A gut-wrenching look into the motivations of refugees desperate enough to board flimsy rubber boats, bound for unknown fates. And a seaside town in the U.K. where millions of Lego pieces, spilled by a container ship, have begun washing ashore.

These are some of the compelling, fascinating and deeply important stories being told by Mountainfilm's 2017 Commitment Grant winners. "The pool of applicants was better than ever in 2017 -- professional, top-notch, filled with stories that need to be told -- which meant the judges had an extra tough job," Program Director Katie Klingsporn said. "While it was extremely difficult, the judges ultimately selected a batch of exemplary projects that are full of potential. We're so excited to support them."

As part of the nonprofit's commitment to help creatives tell stories that matter, Mountainfilm with the support of the American Alpine Club, awards Commitment Grants each fall to filmmakers, photographers, artists and adventurers whose projects are intended to inspire audiences to create a better world. This year, Mountainfilm added $7,500 to the prize money for a total of $32,500. The boost allowed judges to give larger grants to more projects than ever. (Mountainfilm is also awarding Apple laptop computers to five of the winners.)

The Commitment Grant initiative has supported projects ranging from art installations to feature documentaries and photographic explorations. Join us May 25-28 to celebrate commitment grantees who make up some of the festival's most memorable screenings.
