THE BIG BAD FOX AND OTHER TALES – PATRICK IMBERT & BENJAMIN RENNER

AUDIENCE AWARD

THE BREADWINNER – NORA TWOMEY

ANIMATION IS FILM announced the winners of its inaugural festival with THE BREADWINNER, directed by Nora Twomey, sweeping both top honors of The Grand Prize, selected by the festival jury, and the Audience Award, selected by festival attendees. Twomey co-directed the Oscar®-nominated "The Secret of Kells" from Ireland’s Cartoon Saloon, the animation studio behind the Oscar-nominated “Song of the Sea.” Additionally, THE BIG BAD FOX & OTHER TALES, from Oscar-nominated Benjamin Renner ("Ernest & Celestine") and Patrick Imbert, took home The Special Jury Prize. The film was produced by Oscar-nominated Didier Brunner ("Kirikou and the Sorceress,""Triplets of Belleville,""The Secret of Kells,""Ernest & Celestine").

The Breadwinner  Le Grand méchant renard

Speaking on behalf of the entire jury, festival jury chair Peter Debruge, said "The Breadwinner is not just an incredibly important film, but one that reminds us of the power of animation to communicate serious issues in the world. Transforming hardship into a warm and moving story, the movie represents a triumph by its director, Nora Twomey, in terms of script, voice acting, design, music and editing. The films in competition this year illustrated the many techniques and possibilities of animation, but The Breadwinner was a clear favorite among our jury. Special Jury Prize goes to Big Bad Fox and Other Tales, a comedy that celebrates the joys of traditional cartoon animation."

A selection of twelve new animated feature films in competition

The inaugural edition of ANIMATION IS FILM took place October 20-22 at the TCL Chinese 6 Theater in Hollywood. The Festival presented a selection of twelve new animated feature films in competition, with selections from Asia, Europe, South America and North America, and filmmakers attending for most screenings. Additionally the festival presented studio events, special screenings, short film programs, and a VR lounge, with the majority of screenings selling out. The festival was presented by GKIDS, Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Variety, and ASIFA Hollywood, with major sponsors LA Times, IndieWire, Cartoon Brew, Fathom Events and Google. Full 2017 film lineup is available at AnimationIsFilm.com.

ANIMATION IS FILM fills a gap in the market by establishing a world class animation festival in the US, with its home in the world capital of filmmaking. The Festival embraces the highest aspirations of animation as a cinematic art form on par with live action filmmaking and will be vocal advocate for filmmakers who push the boundaries of their work to the fullest range of expression that the medium is capable of.

the people have spoken!

We are thrilled to announce the 2017 GU Film House Audience Awards, as voted by our audiences.

Best Feature went to Warwick Thornton's frontier western - Sweet Country.  If you missed this during the festival, there's another chance - the official release is set for March 16, 2018. Phew!

It's not surprising that Jill Bilcock: dancing the Invisible scooped up Best Documentary - the hugely entertaining film about the editor behind Baz Luhrmann’s red curtain trilogy of Strictly Ballroom (1992), Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Moulin Rouge! (2001), among many others.

And it's far from strange that Oddlands took Best Short.  If you didn't see this at our Art On Screen premiere, we heard a rumour that it'll be broadcast on ABC TV early next year. Watch that space.

ARTWORK UP FOR AUCTION

Webp.net-gifmaker1.120558.gif

Could you be the next owner of one of these?

Our 2017 Reactive Wall artists took up residence for a day each in the Film Festival courtyard.  We were lucky to have artists JACK, JS2KE, KAB101 and SHEP + CASPER paint their responses to four films in the program.

Details of the auction - the when, where and how, will be revealed next week, Tuesday 31 Oct. Stay tuned for more details here.

All proceeds go back to the artists. Special thanks to legendary SA street artist, KAB101, who coordinated the project and the City of Adelaide for making this possible.

.... and that's a wrap

ADL Film Fest 2017 has been and gone, but this isn't goodbye....

We're back on in 2018.  YAAASSS !!

No more vague memories of film festivals been or waiting around two years for the program to go live on the website.

So if you didn't get enough this year, you are in for a treat in 11 months time. Not that we're counting down or anything.

Thanks to all our supporters and the yaysayers for getting us there - we're going back to back, baby, and it never felt better.

Roll on 2018.

The 11th Annual Byron Bay International Film Festival

Award Winners 2017

The Australian-made drama One Less God took the Best Film Award at the 11th Byron Bay Film Festival Closing Gala on Saturday night.

Telling the personal stories of Taj Mahal Palace hotel guests and staff caught up in the terrorist attack in 2008 – and of two of the Islamist attackers – the film held capacity audiences spellbound during two screenings at the festival.

Director, co-producer and writer, Central Coast-based Lliam Worthington, who is taking the film to Mumbai this week, noted the “incredible value” of such an award on the international scene.

Co-producer Maren Smith said: “The packed houses and the audience buzz at Byron really bodes well for our upcoming theatrical release, so we can’t wait to share it with a wide audience.”

The film, though gruelling, had been an “absolute hit” with audiences, “sparking debate, passionate commentary and heartfelt appreciation”, said Festival Director J’aimee Skippon-Volke.

Second project market to take place December 9 to 11 with

14 new projects seeking finance and partners

The second annual IFFAM Project Market (IPM), which takes place December 9-11 during the second International Film Festival & Awards • Macao, has announced the 14 projects selected to take part in this year’s event.

The market, curated by genre expert and producer Todd Brown and designed to showcase international projects with Asian elements and principally with a genre theme, will offer cash prizes in the amount of $30,000 provided by sponsors Ivanhoe Pictures, Huace Pictures and Hairun Media.

The 14 projects consist of 11 genre films - eight selected by IPM and one each from international market partners Blood Window (Argentina), Frontieres (Canada) and Sitges Film Festival (Spain) - and three auteur titles.

Among the world-class filmmakers with new projects at the market are South Korean master Im Sang-soo (The President’s Last Bang, A Good Lawyer’s Wife, The Housemaid) with his chilling thriller Dead In The Lake; Belgian duo Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani (Let The Corpses Tan, Amer) with their New York-set sexual revenge thriller Darling; Brimstone director Martin Koolhoven with his lavish period noir The Emerald Butterfly set in Dutch colony Indonesia in 1946; and Australia’s Ivan Sen (Toomelah, Mystery Road, Goldstone), who presents his next film Loveland, a sci-fi romantic thriller set in a Chinese mega-city of the future.

Canada’s Richie Mehta (Siddharth, Amal, India In A Day) brings his new project The Price Of Tea about an American man who spends a day with a Chinese woman on a tour of Beijing; and Macao-based Ivo M. Ferreira (Letters From War) brings his newest project Projecto Global about a wave of political bombings, robberies and executions that swept through Portugal in the early eighties.

All the selected projects will take part in an extensive industry program designed to match the filmmakers with a broad cross section of high level industry professionals and drive projects forward. The IPM takes place within the framework of the Industry Hub at IFFAM.

Todd Brown said: “We were thrilled at the level of success at the inaugural IFFAM Project Market – with two selected projects closing financial deals at the market and others doing so shortly thereafter building on relationships forged at the IFFAM – and we look to build on that success with the second edition. With a blend of established, top level talent and bright rising stars from around the globe we believe we have assembled a collection of projects here sure to thrill audiences, critics and industry alike and are proud to be a part of bringing these amazing projects to life.”

Thank yous owed: A LOT  >>>

Thanks to the sponsors without whom none of this would have happened... these are the successful companies using their resources to support outdoor filmmaking and youth in the outdoors! Yay them.

Thanks to the filmmakers whose vision, expression and storytelling inspires us to go to our special places and recreate or be still... keep up the great work!

Thanks to the tireless jury of volunteers who pored over the hours and hours of submissions to select the films - and winners - of MOFF 2017... and the other volunteers who helped with setup at the venues and postering. Now, how can we help you guys!? (seriously, let me know)

Thanks to the venue operators and local organizers who brought MOFF to their town and rustled up local interest.

Thanks to the MOFF fans who spread the word both online and the old-fashioned way, and who attended the screenings! (if a film is screened in the forest and no one sees it, does it make a sound?)

And finally, thanks to the relatives of the MOFF production team for putting up with our long hours away from home as we put the time in necessary for this passion project to grow (let's go hiking this weekend, family!).

Winners of the 8th American Film Festival in Wroclaw have been announced

The festival of American cinema in Wroclaw is coming to an end. Winners of the 8th American Film Festival were announced at today's closing gala.

Traditionally, the audience was the jury of the AFF, by voting for their favorite films. Of the 13 films in the Spectrum section, the vote winner was John Carroll Lynch's Lucky, with the final role of Harry Dean Stanton, who previously starred in Twin Peaks and Paris, Texas. He plays a loner seeking answers to the meaning of the passage of time and gets help from a gaggle of stars, including David Lynch.

Of the 10 documentaries in the American Docs section, audience members chose The Work by Jairus McLeary and Gethin Aldous. The film is a visit to one of the worst places in the world, but, at the same time, it works as a kind of unusual therapy. We watch a group of people who let themselves get locked up twice a year in the notorious Folsom prison.

The winning films received prizes of $10,000 (feature) and $5,000 (documentary), funded by BNY Mellon.

This year, for the first time in AFF history, there was a new section called the Ale Kino+ Competition. A jury selected from the AFF’s most loyal viewers chose 3 out of 10 films, which will be shown on the Ale Kino+ cable channel in the coming months.

Ale Kino+ Competition Winners:

Alex Ross Perry's  Golden Exit - "For showing the ordinary lives of ordinary people in an extremely melancholic, nostalgic and emotional way."

Eliza Hittman’s  Beach Rats - "For subtle and empathic themes of adolescence and the discovery of one's sexuality."

Onur Tukel’s  The Misogynists - "For a bold, ironic and disturbingly current socio-political diagnosis that evokes laughter, trepidation and sorrow all at the same time."

We look forward to seeing you at the 9th American Film Festival next year!
