This past Monday evening we announced the winners of the 27th Annual IFP Gotham Awards at our awards ceremony hosted by John Cameron Mitchell and held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name won the Best Feature and Breakthrough Actor (Timothée Chalamet) awards, while Jordan Peele's Get Out took home Breakthrough Director, Best Screenplay, and the Audience Award.

New CharityBuzz item up on the IFP page: The original Call Me By Your Name novel signed by director Luca Guadagnino, Breakthrough Actor winner Timothée Chalamet, and Armie Hammer. Bid quickly

The award for Best Documentary went to Strong Island, director Yance Ford's examination of family trauma and years of unanswered questions wrought by the loss and unprosecuted murder of his brother by a white man in 1992.

Winning the award for Best Actor was James Franco for his impeccable comedic and passionate incarnation of Tommy Wiseau, director of the notorious The Room (the "Citizen Kane of bad movies") in The Disaster Artist, which Franco also directed.

Saoirse Ronan was voted Best Actress for Lady Bird, in which, as the self-named titular character, she rages against everything that reminds her she is trapped in Sacramento, awaiting flight from her senior year in Catholic school to a far, far better place...hopefully New York.

Career Tributes were also given during the ceremony to actors Nicole Kidman (presented by Reese Witherspoon) and Dustin Hoffman (presented by Elizabeth Marvel), director Sofia Coppola (presented by Tamara Jenkins), producer Jason Blum (presented by Ethan Hawke), cinematographer Ed Lachman (presented by David Byrne), and a Humanitarian Tribute to Al Gore (presented by Dan Rather).

Taking inspiration from the festival theme of "Digital Cloudiness", a team of 9 digital arts students explore ideas around pixelated nature, universal simulation, and the data cloud as a new form of environment. These young artists investigate possibilities for tearing open analog reality, finding consciousness and meditation in a torrent of data.

"If You Were a Real Filmmaker, You'd Have a Fancier Camera": Oren Jacoby on Shadowman

6a9f2d27-eaec-4934-8468-a1c474089bc8.jpg

by Erik Luers

One of the most celebrated street artists of the 1980s, Richard Hambleton created a collection of equally eccentric and harrowing work that decorated the walls, alleyways and sidewalks of New York City. Along with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Hambleton was an unrivaled challenging artist and, as his contemporaries tragically died before middle age, one of its remaining beacons of inspiration. While known for his "murder art" - chalk outlines of fictitious crime scenes splattered with red paint resembling blood - and his Marlboro Man paintings crafted from a thick tar-like substance, Hambleton's most iconic pieces serve as the namesake of Oren Jacoby's new documentary in theaters this week.

Documentary Editing for Filmmakers

8c33155e-ea66-4af9-b204-fd901b2f5f42.png

Two-day class: Saturday Dec 2nd and Sunday, December 3rd from 10:30am - 5:30pm

Editing is at the core of documentary filmmaking. Yet there are few resources to learn about editing from the director's perspective. As a result, even relatively experienced filmmakers find the post-production process stressful and overwhelming. And for first-time filmmakers, it's a major stumbling block.

This two-day workshop, taught by Emmy-award-winning editor and producer Adam Bolt, will teach you how to think about editing in order to make better decisions while shooting and how to plan and manage a successful edit to get the most out of your budget and schedule. We'll also explore different storytelling strategies and discuss the most common editing pitfalls, using examples from real projects.

SAFF Project Market 2017 reveals "The Hunted" and “Mina-Anud” as top winners

ScreenSingapore, together with Southeast Asian Audio-Visual Association (SAAVA) and Ties That Bind: Asia/Europe Producers Workshop (TTB), today announced two projects from Indonesia and The Philippines as winners of the third Southeast Asian Film Financing (SAFF) Project Market. “The Hunted” took home the Aurora Producing Award, RED Digital Camera Award as well as The Yellow Box Soundscape Award, while “Mina-Anud” won the Basecamp Colour Prize.

With three successful runs under its belt, the SAFF Project Market aims to match promising feature-length projects with Southeast Asian elements, with a global network of media financiers, distributors and collaborators, who can catapult these projects to fruition. By facilitating interaction between producers and key players in the film industry, the initiative strives to grow the standards of filmmaking in the region.

This year, the SAFF Project Market 2017 received submissions from 16 countries, with the 15 finalists representing Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Singapore, The Philippines as well as Thailand. These covered a myriad of genres such as animation, drama, fantasy, thriller and dark comedy.

Amongst the shortlist, five projects – of which one won – hailed from Indonesia, which is the Singapore Media Festival’s Country of Focus.

“The Hunted” centres on four girls pitting their wits to survive after waking up from a rave party in Bali, when they find themselves stranded on an island, and pursued by two hunters who have paid big money for the “ultimate hunting trophy” – human beings.

“The Hunted” stood out from its competitors due to its potential to be commercialised and co-produced across Southeast Asia and beyond, and also for its technical excellence. For this project, producers Allen Jordan and Delon Tio will receive a S$20,000 co-production investment from Aurora Media Holdings; a loan of a RED SCARLET-W camera kit worth US$25,000 from RED Digital Cinema; as well as a S$20,000 post-production prize from one of Southeast Asia’s top music and audio houses, Yellow Box Studios.

Co-producer and director Delon Tio shared, “We feel flattered to win three awards and believe they will help greatly in elevating “The Hunted” to the next level in various ways. Through our participation in the SAFF Project Market, we were able to gain greater exposure for our film and raise more funds. Additionally, the SAFF Project Market is a great platform for us to connect and meet potential investors and partners outside of Indonesia, and there are plans for us to return next year with new ideas.”

Separately, “Mina-Anud” won the Basecamp Colour Prize from Basecamp Films. The US$10,000 award is for feature film colour grading, to ready a film for screening for festivals or at the cinema. “Mina-Anud” tells the story of two local surfers who must decide if the lure of a richer tomorrow is worth risking family and freedom when three tonnes of cocaine gets washed up on the shores of a peaceful seaside community in Eastern Samar, Philippines.

Sharing his aspirations for this film, director Kerwin Go said, “This film hopes to remind audiences that true wealth is the freedom to live life on our own terms. It’s about experiences and our relationships, rather than monetary and material wealth.”

Working with him on this films as producers will be Bianca Balbuena and Bradley Liew. Of the win, Liew said, “This is the first feature film project of a director who spent 8 years in the industry, dreaming to one day make a film. And this win is a great encouragement for dreamers and artists to go on and face the big players armed with only their stories and passion.”

SAFF Project Market is a partnership between ScreenSingapore, SAAVA and TTB, and is supported by the Asia-Europe Foundation. For more information, please visit http://www.screensingapore.com.sg/film-financing-forum/.

ScreenSingapore is co-located with the Asia TV Forum & Market, and is part of the Singapore Media Festival.

Winner:

The Marriage / Martesa

Director: Blerta Zeqiri
Countries: Kosovo, Albania
Year: 2017

Jury comment:
From short films to her first feature film, we find that the director has now composed a fully-fledged relationship drama about our longing for love whatever the sexual orientation may be. With her own personal signature and with incisive vision, the director demonstrates how we can unmindfully buy into the illusion of happiness, which is based on dishonesty to oneself and those closest to you. Vigourously and authentically set in a Kosovar and Albanian cinema tradition, the film seems like a manifestation for love between human beings, without the parade.

The European Film Academy (EFA) and Filmfest Hamburg congratulate HEARTSTONE by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson, winner of the European University Film Award 2017.

picture: Claudia Höhne

The award will be presented tonight, Friday, 8 December, in the framework of the European Film Awards Weekend in Berlin, at the welcome reception hosted by the Creative Europe Desks.

The nominated films were viewed and discussed in 19 universities in 19 countries and each institution selected its favourite film. One student representative from each university then attended a two-day deliberation meeting to decide on the overall winner.

From the jury statement: “HEARTSTONE is a story about exploration of identities and growing up within an isolated Icelandic community.  It highlights the pressure placed on people to conform to particular gender conventions and social norms. The film offers an individual and unique perspective on the difficulty of experiencing and suppressing same-sex attraction in small, disconnected communities. As an up and coming talent, Gudmundur Arnar Gudmundsson delivers an immersive story visualized by overwhelming natural landscapes and beautiful performances. It stands out not only because it is a good film, but also because it explores relevant contemporary issues within today’s society.”

The aim of this initiative by the European Film Academy (EFA) and Filmfest Hamburg  is to involve a younger audience, to spread the “European idea” and to transport the spirit of European cinema to an audience of university students. It shall also support film dissemination, film education and the culture of debating.

The initiative is supported by the Körber Foundation (www.koerber-stiftung.de) and the Joachim Hertz Foundation and is realised in co-operation with NECS–European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (www.necs.org).

The European Film Awards Ceremony with the presentation of the winners will take place on Saturday at 19.00, streamed live at www.europeanfilmawards.eu.

Congratulations for their win to

Interlude - New Vision Award

INTERLUDE (PARENTHESE)  France / 2016 / 94 mins

Raphaël is 50-something and in a rut. Without telling his wife, he buys a sailboat and convinces his childhood friend Patrick, an eternal teenager, and Alain, a hypochondriac, to go on a tour of the Mediterranean Sea with him. Holidays just like in the old days! The three friends however soon notice that they are not as fit as they used to be and don't really share the same interests anymore. All that changes when they take two much younger women on board who join them on their tour...

My Enemy My Brother - Spirit Of Freedom Documentary

MY ENEMY MY BROTHER  Canada / 2017 / 77 mins

MY ENEMY, MY BROTHER is the real life story about two former enemies who become blood brothers for life: Zahed Haftlang was an Iranian boy who ran away from home to join the army. Najah Aboud was a 19-year old Iraqi who had been conscripted to fight in the war, leaving behind his wife and son. Both men fought in the Iran-Iraq war where Zahed found Najah critically injured in a bunker and decided to risk his own life to save him. Because of Zahed, Najah’s life was spared. Their lives diverged and they didn't see nor hear of one another for 20 years, until one fateful day.

Liyana - Spirit Of Freedom Narrative

A Swazi girl embarks on a dangerous quest to rescue her young twin brothers. This animated African tale is born in the imaginations of five orphaned children in Swaziland who collaborate to tell a story of perseverance drawn from their darkest memories and brightest dreams. Their fictional character's journey is interwoven with poetic and observational documentary scenes to create a genre-defying celebration of collective storytelling.

Owen - Short Film

Hellen lives on the streets with her aging dog, Owen, as her only companion. An opportunity for housing comes her way, but Owen is not allowed to join her.

She has one day to make a series of hard decisions that leave both of their futures hanging in the balance.

The IFFAM Project Market (IPM) Award Winners were announced today at the closing of the IFFAM Industry Hub.  The three winning IPM films were each presented with cash awards of US$10,000.  The winners were:

The IPM Award Sponsors are Hairun Pictures, Huace Pictures and Ivanhoe Pictures. Industry Hub Happy Hour Sponsor is Jay Chan of Paradise Entertainment.

The market, curated by genre expert and producer Todd Brown, is designed to showcase international projects with Asian elements and principally with a genre theme.   It is structured around three core principles:

·         Exciting and authentic integration of international elements in film scripts and productions

·         Offer a diversity of content – carefully curated genre cinema, more intimate auteur cinema alongside projects selected by our international partners – to showcase the current direction of international film production

·         Effective networking sessions bringing filmmakers together with experienced industry partners and financiers and fostering lasting creative collaboration and co-production partnerships.

The IPM presented 14 projects – eight selected by IPM and one each from international market partners Blood Window (Argentina), Frontières (Canada) and Sitges Film Festival (Spain) - and three auteur titles.  Each project was represented in Macao by its director and/or producer.

All the selected filmmakers took part in an extensive industry program of pitches, one-on-one meetings and informal gatherings designed to match them with a broad cross-section of high level industry professionals and drive projects forward. The IPM took place within the framework of the Industry Hub at IFFAM.  The line-up was comprised of:

Todd Brown commented: “It has been exiting to be here again with a really great selection of projects that we are very proud of.  They represent countries from all around the globe and a huge diversity of styles, genres and approach. It’s been very gratifying to see the support from the industry delegates who have come out to meet the Project Market filmmakers.”

Alongside the IPM, the Industry Hub also introduced the Macao Forum, a new initiative in which industry delegates met in roundtables to discuss some of the key issues facing the film business today. Topics discussed this year were:

·                How can the film industry maintain consumer loyalty to the medium, in a world where TV is better than ever?

·                Do film festivals still have the same significance they used to? How can we use them to launch films effectively?

·                How is the growing Chinese market affecting the rest of the world’s independent business?

Discussions were hosted by Clare Stewart, BFI London Film Festival Director, Gilbert Lim, Executive Vice President of Sahamongkolfilm International and Jonah Greenberg, President of Motion Pictures, CAA China.  Insights, information and action points were then shared in a final open door session on Sunday afternoon.

Commenting on the Forum, IFFAM Head of Industry June Wu said “This year we wanted to try a new format, which would bring together industry delegates with different skillsets and backgrounds.  We had great feedback from all the participants and want to express thanks to everyone who attended, especially the discussion hosts.”

The Industry Hub welcomed more than 250 delegates from twenty three countries and the Macao and Hong Kong SARs over the three day event

The 2nd International Film Festival & Awards‧Macao runs from 8-14 December 2017 and the Industry Hub ran from 9-11 December.  The full line-up and additional information on the Festival can be found at http://www.iffamacao.com/en/

FOCUS, the Meeting Place for International Production, sees record attendance for third edition at Business Design Centre, London

Booming state of international production, particularly high-end TV drama and feature film, emerges as key talking point at FOCUS’ high-level programme of seminars

London, 12 December 2017 – Record attendance, increased number of exhibitors, a high-level programme of seminars and keynotes, plus a raft of networking events all combined to make for a highly successful FOCUS 2017, produced by The Location Guide.

Professionals from all sectors of the creative screen industries and from 51 countries visited FOCUS over two days (December 5-6). They were able to meet with 173 exhibiting companies, representing 61 countries, who packed the Business Design Centre in Islington, London. Exhibitors included international film commissions, location providers and production service companies.

The growth at FOCUS comes as the screen industries enjoy booming levels of international production, across high-end television drama, film, commercials and branded content.

The impact of this growing demand for video content of all kinds, driven in particular by tech giants such as Netflix, Amazon, Facebook, YouTube and Google, was one of the key themes of a two-day programme of 34 free-to-attend panels, workshops and presentations featuring over 100 industry leaders.

Among the speakers were Alex Boden (Founder, Pistachio Pictures), Andrew Chowns (CEO, Directors UK), Andy Noble (Co-Producer, Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool), Anna Mansi (Head of Certification, BFI), Ben Barrett (Joint MD, Drive), Caitlin Ryan (Executive Creative Director, Cheil London), Carlo Dusi (Head of Business and Commercial Affairs, Scott Free Films), Dawn McCarthy Simpson MBE (Director of International Strategy, Pact), Denman Rooke (Executive Chairman, October Films), Dominic Minghella (Writer/producer, Island Pictures), Elaine Steel (Agent),  Jason Stone (Editor, David Reviews), Julie Baines  (Founder, Dan Films), Karen Cunningham (Director, Thomas Thomas Films), Kate O’Connor (Consultant/Animation UK), Katie Swinden (Managing Director, Fifty Fathoms), Lindsey Clay (CEO, Thinkbox), Lyndy Stout (Editor, 1:4), Magnus Temple (CEO, The Garden Productions), Natalie Usher (Director, Creative Scotland), Nicolas Brown, (Director Film & TV, Neal Street Productions), Phillip Covell (CEO, AVTN), Philippe Alessandri  (CEO, Watch Next Media), Richard Morris (Partner, Whistlejacket London), Rob Alcock (Head of Training, BBC Academy), Robert Jones (Co-founder The Fyzz Facility), Ruth Fielding (Managing Director, Lupus Films), Sally Joynson (CEO, Screen Yorkshire), Sara Putt (Founder, Sara Putt Associates), Steve Davies (Chief Executive, APA) and Steve Garvey (CEO, Moving Image News), See the full list of speakers here.

The FOCUS programme was developed in consultation with the British Film Institute, British Film Commission, Pact, Advertising Producers Association, Production Managers Association, Creative Skillset, Animation UK, Games London and Women in Film and TV and was presented in association with media partner Variety.

FOCUS also hosted over a dozen dedicated networking events, including the APA Christmas Party, the Location Managers Christmas Drinks with LMGI and receptions by a variety of film commissions including the Thailand Film Office, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau and the Catalunya, Mallorca and Balearic Islands Film Commissions. The networking events at FOCUS were sponsored by Maltsmiths Brewing.

Sustainability played a major role at FOCUS 2017 through the Green Zone, an area dedicated to addressing the environmental impact of the production industry. With the help of AdGreen and BAFTA’s albert, the Green Zone showcased eco-friendly companies and offered advice to production professionals about lowering their carbon footprint.

FOCUS also featured a fully functional English pub on the showfloor, courtesy of Dresd, the organization dedicated to recycling set waste. Kitted out with traditional pub fixtures, The Dresd Inn was used to host a number of events including the Focus Opening Drinks.

FOCUS 2017 Managing Director Jean-Frederic Garcia said: “FOCUS 2017 celebrated its third year with record attendance and exhibitor numbers, welcoming visitors from all across the world and from all sectors of the creative screen industries. We enjoyed a bustling exhibition hall, a rich conference programme and many networking events. We’re particularly proud of the friendly, welcoming atmosphere of the show which so many visitors commented on. We look forward to seeing everyone again at FOCUS 2018.”

The 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® presented by SAG-AFTRA with Screen Actors Guild Awards, LLC is produced by Avalon Harbor Entertainment, Inc. and will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018 at 8 p.m. (ET) / 5 p.m. (PT). Prior to the televised ceremony, the honorees for outstanding action performances by film and television stunt ensembles will be announced during the SAG Awards Red Carpet Pre-Show webcast.

One of the awards season’s premier events, the SAG Awards annually celebrates the outstanding motion pictures and television performances from the previous calendar year. Of the top industry honors presented to actors, only the SAG Awards are selected entirely by performers’ peers in SAG-AFTRA. The SAG Awards was the first televised awards show to acknowledge the work of union members and the first to present awards to motion picture casts and television ensembles.

Two nominating panels — one for television and one for film — each composed of 2,500 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees. Final voting information will be sent to the 121,544 SAG-AFTRA members in good standing across the country, who may vote on all categories. In keeping with the SAG Awards’ commitment to sustainable practices, online voting is encouraged and paper ballots are available only upon request received by Friday, Jan. 8, 2018. All votes must be received at Integrity Voting Systems by noon on Friday, Jan. 19. Results will be tallied and sealed until the envelopes are opened by the presenters live onstage at the 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony on Jan. 21, 2018.

The Screen Actors Guild Post-Awards Gala benefiting the SAG-AFTRA Foundation will be hosted for the 22nd consecutive year by PEOPLE and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), joined this year by TNT & TBS, to honor the SAG-AFTRA Foundation and actors’ philanthropic activities. 10 SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENTS TO BE HONORED
WITH ACADEMY AWARDS®

Jonathan Erland to receive Gordon E. Sawyer Award

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that 10 scientific and technical achievements represented by 34 individual award recipients, as well as one organization, will be honored at its annual Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation on Saturday, February 10, at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills.

In addition, visual effects technologist Jonathan Erland will receive the Gordon E. Sawyer Award (an Oscar® statuette) for technological contributions that have brought credit to the industry.

“This year we are happy to honor a very international group of technologists for their innovative and outstanding accomplishments,” said Ray Feeney, Academy Award® recipient and chair of the Scientific and Technical Awards Committee. “These individuals have significantly contributed to the ongoing evolution of motion pictures, and their efforts continue to empower the creativity of our industry.”

Unlike other Academy Awards to be presented this year, achievements receiving Scientific and Technical Awards need not have been developed and introduced during 2017.  Rather, the achievements must demonstrate a proven record of contributing significant value to the process of making motion pictures.

The Academy Awards for scientific and technical achievements are:

TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS (ACADEMY CERTIFICATES)

To Jason Smith and Jeff White for the original design, and to Rachel Rose and Mike Jutan for the architecture and engineering, of the BlockParty procedural rigging system at Industrial Light & Magic.

BlockParty streamlines the rigging process through a comprehensive connection framework, a novel graphical user interface, and volumetric rig transfer, which has enabled ILM to build richly detailed and unique creatures while greatly improving artist productivity.

To Joe Mancewicz, Matt Derksen and Hans Rijpkema for the design, architecture and implementation of the Rhythm & Hues Construction Kit rigging system.

This toolset provides a novel approach to character rigging that features topological independence, continuously editable rigs and deformation workflows with shape-preserving surface relaxation, enabling fifteen years of improvements to production efficiency and animation quality.

To Alex Powell for the design and engineering, to Jason Reisig for the interaction design, and to Martin Watt and Alex Wells for the high-performance execution engine of the Premo character animation system at DreamWorks Animation.

Premo’s speed and simplicity enable animators to pose full-resolution characters in representative shot context, significantly increasing their productivity.

To Rob Jensen for the foundational design and continued development, to Thomas Hahn for the animation toolset, and to George ElKoura, Adam Woodbury and Dirk Van Gelder for the high-performance execution engine of the Presto Animation System at Pixar Animation Studios.

Presto allows artists to work interactively in scene context with full-resolution geometric models and sophisticated rig controls, and has significantly increased the productivity of character animators at Pixar.

SCIENTIFIC AND ENGINEERING AWARDS (ACADEMY PLAQUES)

To John Coyle, Brad Hurndell, Vikas Sathaye and Shane Buckham for the concept, design, engineering and implementation of the Shotover K1 Camera System.

This innovative six-axis stabilized aerial camera mount, with its enhanced ability to frame shots while looking straight down, enables greater creative freedom while allowing pilots to fly more effectively and safely.

To Jeff Lait, Mark Tucker, Cristin Barghiel and John Lynch for their contributions to the design and architecture of the Houdini visual effects and animation system.

Houdini’s dynamics framework and workflow management tools have helped it become the industry standard for bringing natural phenomena, destruction and other digital effects to the screen.

To Bill Spitzak and Jonathan Egstad for the visionary design, development and stewardship of the Nuke compositing system.

Built for production at Digital Domain, Nuke has become a ubiquitous and flexible tool used across the motion picture industry, enabling novel and sophisticated workflows at an unprecedented scale.

To Abigail Brady, Jon Wadelton and Jerry Huxtable for their significant contributions to the architecture and extensibility of the Nuke compositing system.

Expanded as a commercial product at The Foundry, Nuke is a comprehensive, versatile and stable system that has established itself as the backbone of compositing and image processing pipelines across the motion picture industry.

To Leonard Chapman for the overall concept, design and development, to Stanislav Gorbatov for the electronic system design, and to David Gasparian and Souhail Issa for the mechanical design and integration of the Hydrascope telescoping camera crane systems.

With its fully waterproof construction, the Hydrascope has greatly advanced crane technology and versatility by enabling precise long-travel multi-axis camera movement in, out of and through fresh or salt water.

ACADEMY AWARD OF MERIT (OSCAR STATUETTE)

To Mark Elendt and Side Effects Software for the creation and development of the Houdini visual effects and animation system.

With more than twenty years of continual innovation, Houdini has delivered the power of procedural methods to visual effects artists, making it the industry standard for bringing natural phenomena, destruction and other digital effects to the screen.

GORDON E. SAWYER AWARD (OSCAR STATUETTE)

Jonathan Erland

Presented to an individual in the motion picture industry whose technological contributions have brought credit to the industry.

The 90th Oscars® will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.  The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
